ITF warns governments to be careful bailing out debt-laden carriers

As the economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic continues, the OECD’s International Transport Forum (ITF) has renewed its criticism of the structure of the liner shipping industry, according to Splash247. The slump in consumer demand has driven a steep decline in volumes and looks set to wreak havoc on carriers’ balance sheets, and led the ITF to refine its warnings about the re-emergence of state subsidies and associated loss of …

OECD calls for reform of ‘ineffective’ maritime subsidies

Maritime subsidies issued by some of the largest economies to the shipping industry have had a limited impact, according to new research from the OECD, which argues that they need to be reformed.

Opposing sides step up war of words over liner block exemption regulation

As European lawmakers continue to assess whether to extend liner shipping’s block exemption from its consortia legislation, both proponents and opponents of the regulation have released new research to boost their case.
The current block exemption regulation (BER) allows carriers to operate as consortia in trades serving the EU, and was introduced when the EC banned the liner conference system. It is set to expire on 25 April 2020.

Container line alliances reduce shipper choice, says ITF as the EC reviews the rules

The EU should end the block exemption against forming consortia the liner shipping industry currently enjoys, says a new report from the OECD-funded International Transport Forum.
In September, the European Commission reopened its investigation into the block exemption which allows carriers to operate alliances on trades that serve the EU.
Brought into law in 2010 – following the EU’s decision to outlaw the conference system that allowed shipping lines to jointly set freight rates – the...
