The ITF has come to the rescue of 10 Kenyan seafarers who had traveled to Pemba, Mozambique through Tanzania in August 2019, to work on an EU-bound vessel, MV Nina.

Mental Stress Levels At Sea Dangerously High; 20% Of Seafarers Contemplated Suicide Or Self Harm

A wide-ranging study by Yale University – commissioned by the ITF Seafarers Trust – has found dangerously high levels of mental stress among seafarers, and recommended how it can be reduced.

Trade-unionist assaulted by Hutchison port security in Jakarta

An active member of the Jakarta International Container Terminal Trade Union (SPJICT) was yesterday viciously assaulted by Hutchison Port Security in Jakarta. Rio Wijaya reported to the port security post at around 16:30 local time on Tuesday 20 August, having heard that a security guard, Yaser Arafat, was searching for him. Once inside the building Mr Wijaya was beaten by security guards. He was later taken to hospital where he was treated for bruising and a number of injuries.
