Shelley Simpson named CEO at J.B. Hunt in long-expected move

In a long-awaited move, Shelley Simpson has been elevated to CEO at J.B. Hunt. 

Simpson is currently the president of the trucking and intermodal provider. She has been with the company for almost 30 years and has been president since 2022.

Simpson will assume her new role July 1. She will remain president as well.

J.B. Hunt boosted by Walmart deal

Intermodal operator J.B. Hunt’s stock price was boosted by the news that the company had reached a long-term intermodal service agreement with Walmart, with the deal including a sale of the shipper’s intermodal assets to the carrier.

J.B. Hunt subsidiary, J.B. Hunt Transport Inc., will acquire the intermodal containers and chassis owned by Walmart as part of the deal, which will boost the carrier’s dedicated contract services (DCS).

Year-on-year gain in J.B. Hunt intermodal volumes highlight of overall weak quarter

J.B. Hunt’s intermodal segment, the largest revenue producer in the company, showed year-on-year volume growth in the third quarter ending Sept. 30, a rare sign of upturn in an otherwise tough quarter.

While revenue was down compared to the corresponding quarter in 2022, volumes were up 1% year on year, an increase that received both an internal and external notice in looking for positives in the quarterly earnings.

Truckload and multimodal carrier J.B. Hunt told analysts on an earnings call Tuesday that it’s still too early to tell how the 2023 peak season for freight will turn out. The company noted its Q2 declines across the board in revenue, operating income and an operating ratio that fell from 90.8% in Q2 of 2022 to 91.4% this year against a backdrop of lower volumes and softening freight demand.

Scheduling Standards Consortium grows ranks, readies API release

The Scheduling Standards Consortium (SSC) has added seven partners as it prepares new open application programming interface scheduling standards to be released by the end of the year.

Digital freight brokers Uber Freight and Convoy and logistics provider J.B. Hunt formed the SSC in December to begin standardizing trade data and synthesizing scheduling technology.
