Feds noncommittal on timing of next truck parking update

The Federal Highway Administration is leaving open the time frame for its next update evaluating the ability of states to provide adequate parking and rest facilities for truck drivers.

Known as Jason’s Law, the survey and subsequent updates were required by law in 2012 as part of a federal highway funding bill. The first survey, conducted in 2015, found truck parking in the U.S. to be severely lacking, and a 2019 update, made public in December 2020, revealed that the problem continued to grow.

Buttigieg outlines potential truck parking funding opportunities

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg spotlighted on Capitol Hill various federal funding avenues that the trucking industry could take to expand parking capacity for long-haul truckers.

Testifying in response to Sen. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., who told of recent weather that forced trucks to park along the emergency lanes of Interstate 80 due to a lack of adequate parking, Buttigieg told lawmakers on Wednesday he was “very concerned” about the truck parking problem.

“If you talk with any truck...

Study calls for national truck-parking standards

An array of technologies and applications used by truck drivers at the state level to locate and reserve parking spaces highlights the need for a standardized truck-parking information framework across the country, according to a new study.

A research report released on Monday by American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) emphasized that the way to get such a standard in place is to begin working with the National Association of Truck Stop Operators (NATSO), truck driver groups, state and...

Weighing truck parking’s NIMBY risk

When TravelCenters of America [NASDAQ: TA] announced in May 2020 that it had signed a franchise agreement to build a Petro Stopping Center in Monteagle, Tennessee, the company and franchisees Brian Graber, Tammy Graber and Rodney Kilgore expected to be opening its doors in the first quarter of this year.

But a small group of “not in my backyard” (NIMBY) activists took up an opposition campaign last summer that threatened to cancel the project – along with desperately needed new safe parking for...

‘Missed opportunity’ to fund truck parking in COVID relief package

A measure that would have provided $755 million in taxpayer funds over the next five years to expand truck parking capacity was offered and quickly withdrawn during negotiations over the next COVID-19 relief bill.

U.S. Rep. Mike Bost, R-Illinois, who offered the amendment, removed it in the interest of speeding the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee’s all-day markup Wednesday of its nearly $100 billion portion of the overall $1.9 trillion COVID legislation package.

“I know we’re...

Growing truck parking shortages emerge in latest survey

Despite a major awareness campaign following the 2009 murder of Jason Rivenburg while he slept in his cab at an abandoned gas station after being unable to find safe parking, the shortage of safe truck parking spaces in the country continues to grow.

That was the primary takeaway from the Jason’s Law Truck Parking Survey and Assessment released Tuesday by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The assessment, based on a survey that concluded in 2019, was a long-awaited update to the first...
