JNPT opens new rail yard for dedicated freight corridor connectivity

Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), also known as Nhava Sheva, is putting in place the infrastructure required to align its operations with India’s Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC), aiming to go live from the port at the end of this year.

Towards that goal, the port authority has opened a new common rail yard for all terminals in the harbour.

“JNPA is the first port to be completely DFC compliant. DFC compatible rail tracks are being laid from New Delhi to JNPA, and it has been decided to locate...

Carriers field trains to reroute Indian East Coast shipments via Nhava Sheva

Cargo interests in India’s east coast region are pushing container lines to provide more reliable alternative mainline shipping options via Nhava Sheva/Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) or Mundra Port as they see no let-up in transshipment bottlenecks at Colombo Port in Sri Lanka.

In conjunction with Container Corporation of India (Concor), Maersk and CMA CGM have now opened new rail connections from India’s East Coast locations to help local exporters divert cargo away from the traditional...

JNPT CFS operators: Import deliveries disrupted due to system outage

The export-import community at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (Nhava Sheva) has a hard time carting cargo into terminals and securing delivery orders as the port’s own terminal operations systems continue to remain offline, for the fifth day since a suspected cyber-attack on 20 February.

“Since port terminal operating system of JNPCT is currently unavailable due to some technical reasons, we are compelled to adopt a manual procedure for delivery of import containers,” Container Freight Stations...

Update: JNPT system knockout after cyberattack extends into third day

The system outage at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Container Terminal (JNPCT), the oldest marine facility in India’s Port of Nhava Sheva (JNPT), following a ransomware attack on 20 February, stretched into the third day, forcing many port users to turn back to the old and tedious manual method of processes.

Sources in JNPT said all efforts are under way to reinstate the digital applications with the help of the service provider. However, none of the sources were able to say when the system would be...

Cyber attack hits state-owned terminal at India’s JNPT

A vessel flow disruption is brewing in Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), India’s top container port complex, after information systems used by the government-run terminal JN Port Container Terminal (JNPCT) became the latest target of a cyberattack on 21 February.

Sources said the port authority is strenuously working to reinstate the critical applications.

“If the outage is not fixed today, vessels scheduled to call at JNCPT will be affected,” a terminal official told Container News.

However,...

Empty box outflows constrain Indian inventory capacity amid strong demand

While government and industry leaders in India continually call for greater equipment availability to keep pace with rising exports, an analysis of port data reveals one exceptional fact: a sequential rise in the export of empty containers through the country’s larger ports.

For example, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (Nhava Sheva) saw empty exports reach 127,000 TEU between November and January, from about 104,000 TEU of empty boxes sent out in the prior three months. In contrast, empty imports...

India’s JNPT sees 26% growth in 2021

The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), India’s premier container port, handled a record cargo of 5.63 million TEU in the calendar year 2021, against 4.47 million TEU in 2020, registering 25.86% growth over the year.

The total traffic of 76.14 million tonnes and container traffic of 5.63 million TEU is the highest ever traffic handled in a year since the inception of the port.

This is also the highest export-import container traffic handled by any Port in India.

JNPT is a combination of five...

Pipavav’s new hub-and-spoke service speeds up India’s inland rail traffic

As value-added services increasingly occupy centre stage in long-haul freight contracts, bespoke inland services have now become a priority game for marine terminal operators and shipping lines in India.
APM Terminals Pipavav, a growing private harbour on India’s west coast, has accelerated those efforts in recent weeks, rolling out customer-centric container rail services connecting to Jodhpur Inland Container Depot, a key interior point in the north.
After launching its first rail offering …

Transhipment shift to JNPT gathers pace with DP World feeder launch

As intra-country cargo builds around Indian west coast ports, feeder lines are flocking to connect the area to the Far East, shifting transhipment away from Sri Lanka’s Colombo Port.
As shippers desperately search for mainline connections in an acutely imbalanced market, DP World feeder unit Feedertech this week joined the move, opening an India-Far East service.
The launch follows a similar short-haul investment move by Singapore-based regional operator Samudera Shipping Line (SSL).
Dubai-based...
