European partners to create ammonia terminal and storage facility in Rotterdam

Horisont Energi and Koole Terminals have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly create an ammonia terminal and storage facility at the Port of Rotterdam.

In particular, the Norwegian clean energy company Horisont Energi and Koole Terminals, the independent storage and logistics company, will establish a relationship for the storage of ammonia which is produced and shipped from Norway to Rotterdam.

Port of Rotterdam and partners to study commercial-scale hydrogen imports

Port of Rotterdam Authority, Koole Terminals, Chiyoda Corporation and Mitsubishi Corporation have inked an agreement to jointly study the feasibility of a commercial-scale import of hydrogen from overseas sources to one of Koole’s terminals in the port of Rotterdam utilizing Chiyoda’s proven hydrogen storage and transportation technology SPERAHydrogen.

Northwest-Europe will have to import hydrogen on a large scale to become net-zero CO2 emission, according to a statement.

Maersk to produce green fuel in Rotterdam

Maersk Oil Trading and Koole Terminals announced the signing of an agreement to produce IMO 2020-compliant bunker fuel.

The production will take place at the Petrochemical Industrial Distillation (PID) unit, located at Koole’s Botlek site in the heart of the Port of Rotterdam. The toll distillation deal allows Maersk to produce VLSFO bunker fuel and will enable Maersk to further expand its bunker supply volumes in Europe.

Annual production is expected to cover 5-10% of Maersk’s annual fuel demand.

Maersk hedges against shortage of low-sulphur fuel by producing its own

Maersk is taking steps to insure itself against the risk of a shortage of compliant low-sulphur fuel oil (LSFO) when the IMO’s 0.5% sulphur cap becomes law on 1 January next year.
