Fingers crossed as West Coast port labor talks head into overtime

Giant ship cranes extend over containers stacked on a ship with a FedEx truck on a bridge in the background.

The employers who operate West Coast port terminals and the union representing dockworkers on Friday rejected calls to extend their contract that was set to expire at 5 p.m. PST, but they promised to keep cargo moving without interruption until an agreement is reached.

“Both sides understand the strategic importance of the ports to the local, regional and U.S. economies and are mindful of the need to finalize a new coast-wide contract as soon as possible to ensure continuing confidence in the...

FedEx pilots unhappy as UPS, United take lead on new contracts

A purple and white FedEx plane lifts off from runway.

Pilots for FedEx Express are frustrated that they don’t have a new collective bargaining agreement in hand after more than a year of talks, while counterparts at UPS and United Airlines are on track for substantial compensation increases in pending contract agreements.

In fact, all of the major U.S. airlines are negotiating new contracts with their pilots. And with a tangible shortage of pilots contributing to flight cancellations and schedule cutbacks, many pilots can choose where they want to...

Mediation between freight railroads and unions fails. Is binding arbitration next?

A man walks along a railroad track holding a sledgehammer

A new labor agreement between U.S. freight railroads and the railroad unions may not appear anytime soon, both sides hinted late Tuesday following a federal regulator’s decision to halt mediation efforts.

Freight railroads, including the Class I railroads, and the railroad unions have been embroiled in disagreements over a contract since January 2020, with the National Mediation Board (NMB) stepping in earlier this year to mediate. The NMB is an independent federal agency that mediates labor...

Volvo Trucks and UAW cut another deal but workers still booing

United Auto Workers and Volvo Truck North America (VTNA) bargainers reached another tentative agreement Thursday, but early indications are the rank and file like this deal no more than one they sent down in flames earlier this week.

Details of the new pact posted on UAW Local 2069’s Facebook page include a longer contract — six years instead of five — and larger lump-sum bonuses for retirees. A 12% gross wage increase would mean hourly wages for some workers would top out at $30.92 at the end...
