Corps begins dredging St. Joseph Harbor

The Detroit Engineer District will begin dredging 29,500 cubic yards of shoaling near the entrance to St. Joseph Harbor this week and conclude in late August.  

The Corps maintains about 1.5 miles of federal navigation channel to a depth of up to 21 feet in the harbor entrance and river channel, as well as 18 feet in the turning basin. Lake Michigan sea cargo terminal plan wins a key CBP approval

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has approved a proposal from Ports of Indiana-Burns Harbor to establish the first international sea cargo container terminal on Lake Michigan. This would create the only all-water container route for ocean vessels to serve the greater Chicago metropolitan area via the Great Lakes.

Corps reopens Illinois Waterway to navigation

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District, announced Thursday that construction is complete and the Illinois Waterway locks have reopened to navigation after a series of extended, consolidated closures.

Coast Guard seeks record $80,000 penalty for Chicago charter operator

Coast Guard officials in Chicago are seeking $80,000 in penalties against a Lake Michigan charter operator who they say persisted in for-hire cruises despite repeated warnings that he was violating regulations.

Robert Glick of Chicago, who owns the 37’ Sea Ray cabin cruiser Allora and the 35’ pontoon vessel Fun, operating as Offshore 312, was cited for violating three separate federal regulations for each boat while operating a business that involved transporting paying passengers.

The Coast Guard issued fines and pulled one professional mariner’s credential during a campaign to enforce rules against boats operating as illegal charters on Lake Michigan.

The Chicago-area sweeps, conducted over the summer in cooperation with local agencies including the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Chicago Police Marine Unit, were part of a larger national effort by Coast Guard districts to target unlicensed and uninspected vessels for hire in their regions.
