APM Terminals Pier 400 LA sets container-handling record

APM Terminals Pier 400 handled a record-setting 18,465 container moves from a vessel longer than the Eiffel Tower is tall at the Port of Los Angeles this week.

The container moves, crane lifts to or from a cargo vessel, transferred the equivalent of 34,263 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).

HMM lessens first-quarter loss

HMM said Friday it had shaved its year-over-year net loss by $94 million.

South Korea’s largest container carrier reported a first-quarter net loss of 65.6 billion won ($55 million), a 63.2% improvement from the 178.5 billion won ($149 million) net loss in Q1 2019.

HMM was among the Asian carriers criticized this week for receiving government aid while their European counterparts were struggling without federal assistance during the coronavirus crisis.

Samsung Heavy Secures Smart Mega Ship Order from Evergreen

Samsung Heavy Industries Co., a major South Korea shipbuilder bagged a US$920 million order to build six of the world’s largest container ship, reports The Korea Times.
