More direct calls avoiding the UK could reduce the nation to a feeder market

High levels of congestion at major container gateways have led to declining direct port calls by mainline Asia-North Europe vessels, and increased the likelihood that the UK could become a feeder market.
Over the past few months, the ranks of deepsea vessels omitting direct calls and unloading UK-bound cargo at north-west continental Europe gateways have swelled, leaving UK forwarders scrambling to find ways to retrieve customers’ cargo.
This has led some to lament that the country would be …

Congestion problems at UK ports stacking up as rising imports drive delays

The congestion around the UK’s major container ports is showing few signs of abating, with forwarders today reporting more problems at Southampton.
Bad weather at the beginning of the week – heavy fog on Monday forced operations at Southampton to be temporarily suspended – has compounded the familiar issues of high import volumes, mounting stacks of empty containers and a shortage of haulage.
And truck turnaround times at the terminal have taken …

‘Abusive’ ocean carriers driving forwarders to air freight, and rates are rising

“Hell on the high seas” has triggered a new rise in air freight rates after a period of relative stability, say forwarders.
One forwarder called the shipping lines “abusive”, with a strategy that is sending shippers back to air freight.
“It’s getting worse. Carriers are failing, neglecting customers, providing a sub-acceptable service and yet increasing rates daily. At least the air freight sector is not being this abusive.”
One Shanghai forwarder, who said …

Flows had become stagnant and import releases have “drastically reduced”, it said, “which has impacted most of the major shipping lines”.
It added: “Hapag-Lloyd, Maersk, CMA, YML, ONE and MSC have already declared on this, …
