Downplaying The Risk Of EV Battery Fires Poses Serious Concerns

Lithium batteries and the potential fire hazard they pose in electric vehicles (EVs) during transportation by sea, have become a “hot topic” in the industry, says an article published gard.

A rising trade

The rapid increase in demand for EVs is a game-changer, not only for the car industry itself but also for shipping segments involved in transportation.

As far as we know, there is no research suggesting that EVs are more likely to catch fire than other vehicles. To the contrary, some research...

IATA chief accuses Europe of ‘greenwashing’ on aviation emissions

A jet being loaded with cargo and getting refueled at an airport.

A major trade group for global cargo and passenger airlines is calling on governments to do more to ensure increased production of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), as well as the safe deployment of 5G telecommunications networks and carriage of lithium batteries on aircraft.

The International Air Transport Association issued the positions at its annual general meeting in Doha, Qatar, this week.

IATA said governments must quickly adopt large-scale incentives to spur the rapid expansion of...

Airline group launches certification program for lithium battery transport

A pallet of cargo sits on tarmac near airplane with a hazardous goods warning label on it.

The International Air Transport Association on Tuesday introduced a new industry certification to improve the safe handling and transport of lithium batteries by air logistics providers.

The energy source powers a wide variety of consumer goods ranging from mobile phones and laptops, to toys, cars and e-bikes.

Shipments of lithium batteries must comply with well-established global safety standards for how they are manufactured, tested, packed, marked, labeled and documented. These requirements...

Lithium battery maker airlifts assembly line to leapfrog port congestion

Large crates covered with blue tarps lined up in front of a nose-loading air cargo jet on a clear blue day.

In early August, Enovix Corp. completed the installation of specialized equipment for a sophisticated production line in Fremont, California, and is gearing up to begin commercial production of batteries for mobile electronic devices in early 2022.

The ocean congestion griping U.S West Coast ports this year could have derailed those efforts.

For a manufacturer of advanced lithium ion batteries building its first factory on a tight schedule, the prospect of waiting weeks for an automated assembly...

Lithium battery-powered scooters – entrepreneurs must play by the rules

The appearance of new lithium battery-powered scooters on city streets around the world has focused attention on safety.
All the column inches centre on the danger posed to pedestrians and other road users by these new machines hurtling around at 25-35 kph (about 15-20 mph).
However, moving the scooters also presents a range of challenges to manufacturers, distributors, retailers and consumers, as they fall within the scope of dangerous goods regulations, if …

Better education on cargo declarations needed to prevent more containership fires

After the first boxship fire of the year was deemed to have been caused by misdeclared lithium batteries, forwarders have warned that shippers need to be better educated about cargo declarations, or face increased regulation.
According to Chinese shipping line Cosco, the fire onboard its 10,000 teu Cosco Pacific this month was caused by lithium batteries falsely declared as spare parts.
Two containers were destroyed and a number of adjacent boxes damaged. …

Misdeclared lithium battery cargo caused Cosco Pacific fire

After yesterday’s news of the first containership fire of 2020, worldmaritimenews reports that Chinese authorities have moved with amazing speed to identify the cause of the blaze which broke out on the Cosco Pacific on 5 January en route from Port Klang to Jawaharlal Nehru Port: a shipment of misdeclared lithium batteries. Cosco said the three containers in which this cargo was loaded were Wan Hai units, due to be …

More confusion ahead for lithium battery shippers

Shippers of lithium batteries will face a new hurdle from 1 January, thanks to new transport regulations.
The United Nations’ Committee of Experts, which creates the framework for dangerous goods regulations,  has introduced a requirement which obliges manufacturers, and distributors of cells or batteries, to make available the test summary for their products.
To date, lithium cells and batteries have to be tested in accordance with the UN Manual of Test and Criteria …

New packaging for lithium-ion batteries means safer transport – but not by air, yet

The automotive industry will be able to transport lithium-ion batteries in a safer and more sustainable way following the launch of new re-usable packaging.
Developed by Chep, with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), the packaging will help prevent fires, one of the biggest problems in the transport of lithium-ion batteries.
However, the new solution is not economically suited to the small volumes of batteries permitted to be carried by air, instead it’s designed for larger …
