Maersk orders 20 LNG dual fueled containerships

While Maersk may have started the momentum towards green methanol as a marine fuel, its concluding batch of orders placed under its fleet renewal plan announced in August cover 20 LNG dual fueled containerships with a total capacity of 300,000 TEU. This is in line with the trend noted in DNV’s latest Alternative Fuels Insight (AFI) update (see earlier story) in which LNG fueled containerships dominated the picture.

NYK Lines duo will be first ships with variable compression ratio engines

Two new LNG dual-fueled vessels being built for NYK Line will be the first with two-stroke engines featuring the variable compression ratio (VCR) technology announced by Swiss-headquartered engine developer WinGD back in June. At that time, the CSSC Group member company said that the VCR technology eliminates the need for ship operators to compromise on optimal combustion when using multiple fuels.

Sicily to get a “made in Sicily” ferry

Italy’s Sicilian Region is to get an entirely “made in Sicily” ferry to link it with its smaller islands of Lampedusa and Pantelleria.
