With new ULCVs on the horizon, another Asia-Europe loop was ‘inevitable’

With its member lines receiving a large number of newbuild ULCVs this year the addition of a seventh loop between Asia and North Europe by the Ocean Alliance was “inevitable” said Drewry.
While the 2M rival alliance has opted to accommodate six extra newbuild ULCVs into its network revamp by slowing vessel speeds and cutting port calls in order to allow more buffer time in schedules and thereby to improve reliability, …

Supply chain radar: Amazon vs container shipping lines – you’re kidding, right?

During the weekend I was rather entertained by AP Møller Mærsk subsidiary Twill’s latest affairs, and Amazon’s future dominance of the supply chain – a game that the Seattle-based behemoth would be crazy to play. And one that, given the signs and moves so far, it does not intend to play at all.
Those who suggest that the company led by star chief executive Jeff Bezos is likely to be a …

Felixstowe to provide more capacity for growing DFDS ro-ro traffic

The port of Felixstowe has announced that it is to increase its ro-ro capacity for ferry operator DFDS by some 40%.
The development could be seen to be preparation for a surge in demand for services outside the cross-Channel Dover Straits corridor post-Brexit, but a source at the port said it was already in its plans and the timing with Brexit was “largely coincidental”.
The UK’s largest container port will build a …

Supply chain radar: Mid-game gambits – the next moves in DSV + PAN vs CMA CGM + Ceva

I am afraid this is a quick and dirty take with no numbers at all today – thank God is Friday, as my brain and calculators can barely cope with all the different scenarios I have investigated in the past 48 hours. The key takeaway?
DSV + Panalpina is going to happen, but spare a thought for CMA CGM...

Analysis: DSV + Panalpina – from Basel to the sleeping tiger of logistics disruption

With investment bank UBS coordinating the meetings, of course, talk of a Monday DSV+PAN announcement has already begun.
Emotions are running high in secret rooms in Basel – a little town in the Alps on the French-German border, where a pint of lager costs almost 10 quid, and a “Double Whopper” at Burger King is twice as expensive as in London’s Leicester Square.
That might be the reason why, I thought initially, on Tuesday night, Panalpina …

Supply chain radar: DSV & Panalpina – ‘The only question is the final price tag’

Well, what a week that was. So just before you all sign off for the weekend, here’s a last titbit:
The same market sources who helped The Loadstar break news that Swiss 3PL Panalpina would received a Sfr170 a share proposal from DSV, when asked whether they could confirm that the foundation “is significantly more flexible than in the past”, in terms of openness to takeover talks, replied today “the only question is the final …

Box carriers gaining from oil price slump, Brexit and robust rates

Today’s Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) shows a marginal decline in spot rates to North Europe, but there was a jump in rates for the North American market, which is good news for ocean carriers just weeks before new annual transpacific contract negotiations commence.
The SCFI recorded a 0.9% fall in spot rates from Asia to North Europe to $970 per teu, while rates to Mediterranean ports were virtually flat at …

Containership scrapping set to spike as IMO 2020 looms

The containership demolition market is set to rebound this year as owners weed out the oldest and dirtiest vessels from their fleets ahead of the IMO 2020 low-sulphur regulations.
According to London shipbroker Braemar ACM, 10 container vessels have been scrapped so far in 2019, compared with just one ship at the same time a year ago, and a total of only 54 container vessels that were sent to the breakers …

Ocean Alliance revamps network, adding a seventh Asia-North Europe loop

The Ocean Alliance, the largest of the three east-west trade vessel sharing agreements, has published its network revamp, which includes the addition of a seventh Asia-North Europe loop.
Alliance members CMA CGM, COSCO, Evergreen and COSCO-owned OOCL announced their Day 3 Product, to be launched in April, deploying 330 container vessels with an estimated carrying capacity of 3.8m teu across 38 service lanes.
Rodolphe Saade, chairman and chief executive of CMA CGM, said: …
