Union Pacific signs record $1B deal with Wabtec to modernize locomotives

Union Pacific has signed a deal worth more than $1 billion for Wabtec Corporation to modernize 600 of its locomotives. The companies called it “the largest investment in modernized locomotives in rail industry history” in a Wednesday news release.

The locomotives will receive a makeover including digital solutions and innovations. It’s part of UP’s (NYSE: UNP) strategy to improve the efficiency and sustainability of the way it moves freight.

Norfolk Southern, Wabtec to modernize 300 NS locomotives

Norfolk Southern plans to modernize 300 more locomotives with help from Wabtec as part of NS’ broader initiative to reduce carbon emissions and improve fuel efficiency.

Wabtec (NYSE: WAB) has already modernized 500 locomotives belonging to NS (NYSE: NSC), both companies announced last August. By 2025, Wabtec will have modernized more than 950 of NS’ locomotives through a multiyear order that began in 2015. This week’s order is the third order of that agreement.

Union Pacific will be testing higher biodiesel blends for the locomotives it acquired from Wabtec as part of UP’s wider efforts to increase the consumption of low-carbon fuels over the next eight years.

Wabtec modernizes 1,000th locomotive

Wabtec has modernized its 1,000th locomotive in North and South America, the rail equipment manufacturer noted on Friday.
