Shipping number of the week: -3.7% laden container imports onto LA and Long Beach

The two largest ports on the USWC have experienced a 3.7% drop in laden imports over the first ten months of the year, as the effects of the trade war set in. Exports have fallen even more and are down by 6.4%. Laden container imports by the two ports now total 7.1 million TEU, down by 272,961 TEU from last year.

Foss moving 5,000-hp harbor tug to Alaska

The Bering Wind, a powerful Dolphin Class tugboat, is being transferred from the Foss Maritime fleet in Long Beach, Calif., to Cook Inlet Tug & Barge in Anchorage, Alaska. The tug, formerly known as the Campbell Foss, is scheduled to begin service in Anchorage this month.

The vessel was renamed in October of this year and is scheduled to enter service in Alaska by Nov. 15, 2018.

L.A. & L.B port truck drivers to go on strike

A group of port truck drivers who haul goods to and from the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles plan to launch a labor strike on Monday, Oct. 1, a representative for the Teamsters said Wednesday, Sept. 26.
