Shipping line carbon calculators are ‘useless’ – there are ‘no winners here’

Anyone using shipping line carbon calculators should think again, according to research by Sea Intelligence, because the majority of them are “useless”.
“They are riddled with absurdly poor data quality,” said the consultancy, pointing in particular to sailing distances, which vary wildly. It also revealed that while OOCL’s calculator shows emissions of 96.84 tons of CO2, CMA CGM – on the same route, with the same ship – emits just 56.80 …

Punish directors who don’t make climate disclosures, says hedge fund

It’s not just shippers that are beginning to insist their suppliers have a plan to tackle climate change; now investors too are looking to force change. Activist hedge fund TCI plans to target directors of companies that fail to disclose their carbon emissions. The founder said: “Investing in a company that doesn’t disclose its pollution is like investing in a company that doesn’t disclose its balance sheet. If governments won’t force …

Compliance with IMO 2020 – shipowners’ worst fears materialising

The run-up to IMO 2020 is proving far from smooth sailing for shipowners, whether they opt for compliance through using low-sulphur fuel (LSFO) on their vessels or by investing in scrubber technology.
Scrubber retrofits are taking longer and costing more than expected, throwing liner scheduling into confusion and resulting in tramp fixture cancellations, according to the Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems Association (EGCSA).
“A meteoric rise in orders and a global concentration of marine...

Climate change: IAG reviews ‘fuel-tankering’

A new report suggests that slower-steaming is the best way to cut emissions from ships. Cutting ship speeds by 20% would cut sulphur and nitrogen oxides by about 24%, while also reducing  black carbon. But some lines, notably Maersk, are very much opposed to speed limits, and others say it would lead to more ships, and therefore more emissions. The BBC reports.
Perhaps a quicker win in transport would be to end the practice of fuel-tankering by airlines, in …

Unifeeder vessel to trial synthetic natural gas as a ‘climate-neutral’ fuel for box ships

A Unifeeder-chartered vessel is to be used for the first trial of synthetic natural gas (SNG) fuel as a key part of the shipping industry’s quest to decarbonise shipping.
In 2017, the 1,036 teu feedermax Wes Amelie became the first containership in the world to be retrofitted with an LNG fuel system.
Engine manufacturer MAN Energy Solutions and the ship’s owner and manager, Wessels Marine, intend to demonstrate that SNG – produced from renewable electrical energy …

The drive to cut transport emissions has begun, but only moving slowly

Finally, there is movement among logistics companies to make changes to meet the target for the transport sector to cut emissions by 90% in the next 30 years.
But there are still significant hurdles, mostly around cost.
Gebrüder Weiss has implemented changes that saves 25,000 tonnes of CO2 each year, through initiatives such as a wind park and using LNG trucks.
“We can also provide information on your CO2 emissions for a shipment, …

DHL publishes its white paper on sustainable fuels for logistics

DHL has published a comprehensive white paper on sustainable fuels for logistics. And, with the new EC president planning a ‘Green Deal’, which will see transport emissions need to be cut by 90% in the next 30 years, it comes at a useful juncture. The paper explores the benefits of “alternative fuels”, although it notes that electric is “the technology choice of the transport sector” but is currently restricted to …

Users and polluters will pay in drive towards major cut in transport emissions

The transport sector will be forced to significantly cut emissions following the election of future European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen.
She has made a Green Deal the platform of her presidency.
But while there will be inevitable cost hikes and significant change, there are also opportunities – or commercial imperatives.
Transport accounts for 25% of Europe’s greenhouse gas emissions, and it needs to reduce those by 90% by 2050.
“It’s not about …

Grim outlook for carriers: Drewry cuts box shipping growth forecast again

The outlook for container shipping has deteriorated further in the past three months, resulting in another full-year growth downgrade by Drewry.
This is especially unwelcome news for carriers which, over the next few quarters, face a fight for survival in the face of a steep jump in operating costs as a consequence of the IMO’s 0.5% sulphur cap on marine fuel that will become law on 1 January next year.
The consultant said it now expected …

Long Beach port terminals show off new zero-emissions equipment

The US port of Long Beach is showing off new hydrogen and electric-powered handling equipment in its bid to become the world’s first zero emissions sea port. A $5.3m grant allowed it to buy the equipment, in a state-wide initiative.

It comprises five vehicles: two battery-electric top handlers at SSA Marine’s Pacific Container Terminal at Pier J; and one fuel cell yard tractor, one battery-electric top handler and one …
