CMT claims breakthrough in early detection of cylinder scuffing

Glueckstadt, Germany-headquartered engine monitoring specialist CM Technologies (CMT) says that ships’ trials have confirmed that its new scuffing sensor can detect early onset cylinder wear, preventing significant damage to two-stroke marine diesel engines, costly repairs and downtime.

Trials onboard a number of large containerships and a two-stroke engine powered Baltic ferry showed it was possible to measure the friction in the cylinder when the engine is running, something that has not...

Should Ship Owners Be Wary Of Low Quality VLSFO?

In 2019, the shipping industry was facing somewhat different pressures than what it faces today. With IMO 2020 on the horizon, the industry was waiting with nervous anticipation to see the impact of the new regulation, reports Manifold Times.

VLSFO Quality

Some predicted momentous disruption – from the availability, and cost of very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO), to the price spread for heavy fuel oil (HFO) and scrubbers – the debate around the most economically and environmentally viable...

Western Low Sulfur Arbitrage Volumes Could Near 3mil mt In April

April arrival volume was more or less steady, or a touch higher, than around 2.8 million mt or so of product that is expected to land in Singapore for March, traders added, reports S&P Global.

Low sulfur marine fuel

“There’s a little bit of slippage from March arrival into April, not more than 200,000 mt; other than that, the rest of the volumes are entirely slated for April-arrival,” said a trader based here.

Expected Western arbitrage volumes for April, like for March, in itself, would more or...

Why Scrubber Ships Moving From Two To Five Fuel Types?

Copenhagen-listed shipowner TORM on Monday (1 March) reported not all ports allowing the use of 3.5% HFO with scrubbers for its EGCS-equipped vessels, reports Manifold Times.

Solution

As such, its solution is to move from using two bunker fuel types onboard scrubber-equipped ships to five different fuel types.

To date, the company has installed 46 scrubbers. The remaining four are expected to be installed in 2021 and the first quarter of 2022, including the two scrubbers for the LR2 newbuildings.

California cracking down on illegal vessel fuel starting in May

Vessel owners and operators calling at California ports should prepare for more vigorous fuel testing by regulators, aimed at ensuring cargo ships remain compliant with state air pollution laws.

Starting May 1, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) will begin “further analysis” of fuel samples taken during routine inspections of oceangoing vessels, the agency announced on Monday.

The fuel sulfur limit under California’s Ocean-Going Vessels (OGV) Fuels Regulation is 0.1%. However, “there is a...

Navigating service contract negotiations during COVID-19

This is no ordinary year for American shippers and freight forwarders that are attempting to finalize their annual ocean service contracts with the container carriers.

The uncertainty of how much cargo will be available from the shippers and the amount of capacity offered by the carriers for the next contract season, which generally starts in May, remains anyone’s guess in the face of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“The biggest obstacle we face in service contract negotiations this year is the...

Low Sulphur Fuels Contributes To Higher CO2 Emissions, Says Spliethoff

With less than 6 months before the new rules on marine fuels come into force, more and more shipping companies are communicating how they intend to comply it, reports Value Maritime.

Spliethoff’s option to comply

While most shipping companies will simply switch to low sulphur fuel, Spliethoff opts for scrubbers claiming that is a better alternative for the environment.

Why scrubbers?

The Dutch shipping company Spliethoff opts for scrubbers because:

  • Spliethoff says low sulphur fuels will lead to...

Shipping Corporation Changes Course on Scrubbers on its Vessels

State-run Shipping Corporation of India Ltd (SCI) will use low sulphur fuel to comply with an impending global rule aimed at cutting emissions from ships, reports Ship Technology.

Low Sulfur fuel

It will now use low sulphur fuel oil instead of installing exhaust gas cleaning systems or scrubbers in any of its ships from 1 January 2020.

SCI chairman and managing director Anoop Kumar Sharma said: “We are not putting in any scrubbers whatsoever.”

He added “In the beginning, we were thinking of...

EU Proposes Changing Fuel Reporting Mechanisms for IMO 2020 Consistency

  • The EU’s proposal of shipping reporting mechanism change is up for a debate at the MEPC of the IMO next month.
  • The current reporting system would be expanded to allow for reporting and testing of sulphur fuel content for 3-5 years.
  • In addition to shipowners reporting fuel non-availability, the proposal also calls for the testing agencies to provide data on ports, dates and fuel quantity supplied.
  • As of February, 3 ships have reported compliant fuel non-availability whereas IMO’s global...
