LSFO Demand To Spike As Coal Plants Shuts Down

  • Korea East-West Power raises December LSFO purchases
  • Coal plants shut down will trigger LSFO demand which eventually result in higher purchase
  • IMO 2020 transition, local ECAs spur LSFO demand
  • Refiners’ run cuts support 0.5% sulfur marine fuel prices

According to a Platts report, the planned shutdown of some coal-fired power plants in South Korea is likely to propel low sulfur fuel oil demand, which has already seen an increase due to stricter environmental rules in international shipping as...

USCG Refiners Cite ‘Compatibility Issues’ With Fuel Blending

  • A dip in aviation demand has cut jet fuel prices low enough for blending into marine fuels.
  • Jet fuel is more likely being used in US Gulf coast refineries as cutterstock, a light petroleum stream blended to reduce viscosity.
  • LSFO production requires blending lower-viscosity material with high-viscosity residual fuel oil to meet the minimum viscosity specification shipowners.
  • Technical difficulties, low jet fuel prices and resurgent shipping demand have inverted the typical pricing relationship...

Preparations, Flexibility, Timely Action – The Key To Smooth IMO 2020 Transition

According to Peter M. Grunwaldt, the Vice President of Hafnia Bunkers, there are three pivotal steps that could change the course of IMO 2020 regulation and make way for smooth implementation.

During late 2019, the maritime industry was gearing up to IMO 2020. The logistical complexity and financial repercussions were going to be huge. While living and working through this step change, Hafnia Bunkers found that preparation, flexibility and timing were all essential for a smooth, efficient...
