Choosing the right temp-controlled partner can provide profit boost

On-time performance is one of the most important metrics in the transportation industry. When shipments arrive late, companies lose money and jeopardize important partnerships. When it comes to temperature-controlled shipments, however, the stakes are even higher.

“Temperature-controlled is a completely different beast. It is over 100 degrees in the Southeast. Customers want to make sure there are no fluctuations in temperature,” said Frank Hurst, executive vice president of LTL at Echo Global...

Paccar price hikes propel Q2 profit surge

Paccar charged 15% more for a new truck than a year ago, a driving force behind a surge in second-quarter profits.

But inflation-driven pricing is only part of the story of a record 70% increase in Q2 profitability.

The Bellevue, Washington-based parent of Kenworth, Peterbilt and DAF Trucks charged customers substantially more for new equipment than the roughly 9% increase it paid to build a truck.

“We expect [gross profit] margins of 18-19% in Q3. That’s a testament of how we see the price/cost...

The data to watch if Yellow shuts down

The fifth-largest trucking carrier in the country, Yellow (NYSE: YELL) is teetering on the edge of bankruptcy as a dispute between management and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the union representing the truck drivers, threatens to massively disrupt operations next week.

There’s reason to believe that Yellow’s board’s decision not to make a $50 million payment into the Teamsters’ pension fund signals an intention to file for bankruptcy in the near future. And if Yellow doesn’t pay,...

If you’re only shipping a handful of pallets, it makes sense that you should only pay for that amount of space, right?

Less-than-truckload shipping makes it possible for businesses to cost effectively send smaller shipments. In recent years, it has become an important part of many retailers’ shipping strategies.

As such, more freight brokers and 3PLs are handling LTL shipments domestically, cross-border and internationally and require extra insurance coverage in case of the unexpected.

While...
