Fuel prices still deter scrubber installations

Oil has been trading in a narrow range in the low US$40 more or less since July after the market began to worry that even with large supply cuts from OPEC+ and curtailments in the US, demand will not recover fast enough to draw down the record-high inventories that had built in the second quarter.

The global bunker market in turn has mirrored general trends of crude indexes, according to MABUX, whose World Bunker Index has risen slightly for a week.

In particular, the 380 HSFO index bearly rose...

Bunker fuels see uptrend despite IBIA’s forecast

The persistent worry that world economies are not recovering from the coronavirus lockdowns robustly enough to absorb a new increase in oil production is still the downward driver on the global fuel market.

At the same time, International Bunker Industry Association’s (IBIA) members expect significant 2020 bunker demand drop due to the Covid-19 crisis.

However, the World Bunker Index MABUX has demonstrated a slight upward evolution for a week, as all 380HSFO, VLSFO and MGO indexes increased.

At...

Covid and trade war fears drop oil and fuel prices

Oil prices have been dropped down for a week, while the slowing economic activity around the world, restricted mobility, and fears of the second wave of pandemic and of another trade war are just a few of the key factors that will continue to weigh on oil and fuel prices and could cause more significant downward moves.

The World Bunker Index MABUX has also declined for a week with the 380 HSFO index fell to US$293 / mt, VLSFO lost US$23.00 / mt and MGO declined to US$411 / mt.

At the same time,...

Fresh Demand Worries Keep the Oil Indexes in Turmoil

According to a MABUX press release, MABUX World Bunker Index (consists of a range of prices for 380 HSFO, VLSFO and MGO (Gasoil) in the main world hubs) declined on September 07:

380 HSFO: USD/MT 303.68 (-3.33)
VLSFO: USD/MT 349.00 (-4.00)
MGO: USD/MT 425.77 (-1.93)

  • Meantime, world oil indexes also decreased on Sep.07 as Saudi Arabia made its deepest monthly price cuts to supply for Asia in five months and uncertainty over Chinese demand clouds the market’s recovery.
  • Brent for November...

BIMCO’s survey shows IMO2020 compliance difficulties

The answers and comments provided by respondents at the BIMCO’s Fuel Oil Quality and Safety Survey suggest that the transition to IMO2020 compliant fuel oil (0.5% sulphur) has not been without problems.

Furthermore, the survey’s results said that as fuel oil properties are fluctuating, quality and safety problems will continue to be a challenge for the global shipping industry.

Between February and May 2020 BIMCO, The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), INTERCARGO and INTERTANKO conducted...

Container ships have the most scrubbers fitted says BIMCO

The share of the container ship fleet with scrubbers installed exceeded that of the crude oil tanker fleet by the start of July – as container ships with a collective cargo-carrying capacity of 5.3 million TEU are now fitted with the exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCS).

However, while the scrubber-fitted fleet of main cargo-carrying ship types now counts 2,600 ships, most of the fleet – around 70,000 ships – are still without a scrubber. In the past couple of weeks, it has been a rather quiet...

Bunker indexes see slight upturn

Global Bunker Market remains in the same holding mode that has prevailed in the last 25 days approximately.

The MABUX World Bunker Index showed a slight upward evolution over the last week. The 380 HSFO index increased by US$3/mt, VLSFO gained US$4/mt and MGO added US$3/mt. The price difference between 380 HSFOs and VLSFOs (the so-called scrubber spread) rose slightly by US$1.47 and averaged US$57.66.

The average scrubber spread in Rotterdam has narrowed to US$48.33 from US$51.00 a week ago. In...

Oil demand faces and uncertain short-term future

Oil price increases have stalled at about US$40/bbl, around 30% lower than a year, but considerably higher than the April lows as the Covid induced lull in consumer demand has hit prices.

According to MABUX some weeks ago, it looked like oil and fuel demand would have a V-shaped recovery, but the recent resurgence in Covid-19 cases in many parts of the world and the real possibility of new lockdowns has slowed the fragile recovery again.

Even so the MABUX World Bunker Index has showed...

Concerns over fuel quality after long VLSFO storage

Floating storage of very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) can cause some of these blended fuels to sludge, blocking pipes and filters on board vessels as asphaltenes increase during the period when the fuel remains unused.

According to MABUX concerns for the quality of VLSFO bunker fuel have arisen because of the continued “Weakness in prices and slow demand”.

Some reports suggest that after around 90 days of storage, “Asphaltenes start to precipitate and sludge problems could develop. The sludge...

Narrow HFO/VLSFO spread stalls scrubber installations

Global fuel demand is showing some signs of improving although the market outlook is still quite bearish as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

The MABUX World Bunker Index showed a slight upward evolution over the last seven days for all major types of bunker fuel. The 380 HSFO index was steady at US$301 – 302/mt, VLSFO was up US$11 to US$367/mt and MGO increased from US$435 to US$446/mt.

The price difference between 380 HSFOs and VLSFOs (the so-called Scrubber Spread (SS)) averaged US$57.06,...
