Malta: Annual return of shipping firms benefitting from tonnage tax scheme

Transport Malta published a circular drawing the attention of all concerned to the reporting obligations contained in the Merchant Shipping (Taxation and Other Matters Relating to Shipping Organisations) Regulations.

Namely, shipping organizations falling within the scope of regulation 4(4) of these Regulations and approved as such, must submit an annual declaration to the Commissioner for Revenue, in the form set out in Annex 1 to the Notice further below.

Migrants hijack tanker after rescue off Libya

Refugees and migrants have reportedly hijacked the Palau-flagged tanker ‘Elhiblu 1’, after the ship rescued them off the coast of Libya, Tuesday night. The Maltese navy took over control shortly after and the ship arrived in Malta Thursday morning.

The Palau-flagged tanker ‘Elhiblu 1’ picked up a total of 108 people from the water, but they took the helm when it became clear that the ship planned to take them back to Libya.

30,000 Tonne LSFO Headed For Megatanker, Oceania

  • Euronav has chartered a tanker to bring a 30,000 tonne cargo of low-sulphur fuel oil from northwest Europe to Malta.
  • They have parked the mega tanker, Oceania, offshore Malta since Jan. 12, as per ship-tracking data.
  • Vortexa said that the STI Brixton tanker loaded low-sulphur fuel oil from Antwerp on March 9 and is due to reach Malta by Wednesday.
  • Here it will likely transfer its cargo via a ship-to-ship operation onto the ultra large crude carrier (ULCC).

Court in Malta decides that ship’s mortgage overrides foreign auction

A ship was arrested in Malta after a creditor obtained a Maltese court order claiming a judicial sale by auction of the ship in Jamaica was ignored. Jebmed SRL were first ranking creditors of the 22,988-tonne bulk carrier Bright Star, which at the time was called Trading Fabrizia, by virtue of a mortgage registered in Malta, where the ship was registered, in 2017. As the vessel went into financial distress while in Haiti and Jamaica, it was arrested by many creditors, such as Jebmed.

Migrants onboard Sea-Watch accept food after refusing eating

Sea-Watch, after being stranded at sea for up to 17 days reported, through Twitter, episodes of people refusing to eat. Yet, on December 8, Sea-Watch gave an update, stating that people started eating again.

Specifically, according to the rescue vessel approximately 49 migrants stranded off the coast of Malta, started eating again after refusing since no European ports offer them a safe port.
