Information exchange can improve actions at sea

Enhancing the coordination between maritime authorities and across borders is crucial, and to be successful, interoperability is important. The EU’s Common Information Sharing Environment (CISE) is doing exactly that, and last week, the European Commission has released a staff working document to present its progress so far.

Interoperability is the technical ability to exchange information between systems that were developed completely independent from each other.

CISE, launched in 2014, is...

Croatia uses EMSA’s drone boosting maritime surveillance

The Croatian authorities are using EMSA’s Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) to boost their coast guard functions, as to monitor vessel traffic, conduct search and rescue procedures and detection and monitoring of marine pollution.

Croatia’s Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure requested the service in February 2019 and will make use of the service, in addition to their existing surveillance systems, for the three-month period.

Specifically, the RPAS will be under the control...

Iran shuts down US surveillance drone in Strait of Hormuz

Amid a growing tension between the US and Iran in the light of the two tanker attacks in the Gulf of Oman last week, Iranian forces now have reportedly shut down a US military surveillance drone while flying over the Strait of Hormuz.

While Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) claimed the aircraft had violated Iranian airspace, the US military insisted the drone had been over international waters at the time.

IG Clubs continues survey triggers for tankers carrying HFO

As part of the industry’s efforts to ensure higher ship standards, the International Group of P&I Clubs (IG Clubs) continues to implement survey triggers for seagoing vessels of 10 years of age or more carrying HFO, the American P&I Club reminded in a new circular.

As a consequence, all sea-going vessels aged 10 years or more which have carried heavy HFO as cargo within the previous 12 months will be subject to condition survey, unless:

DNV GL rolls out remote surveys for ships

All DNV GL-classed vessels are now able to utilize the possibility of remote surveys for some inspections through the Veracity data platform, which means that a DNV GL surveyor will not be required to travel to the vessel.

Instead, by using an online connection or video streaming link, a dedicated team of remote surveyors can provide support to vessels anywhere in the world with documentation, images, video (streaming or recordings), and input provided by the customer and crew.

This is another...

ABS: Guidance on safe use of Remote Inspection Technologies

ABS published guidance notes on the use of remote inspection technologies, detailing best practices for their use on class surveys and non-class inspections. The guidance notes cover pilot-operated unmanned aerial vehicles, remotely operated underwater vehicles and robotic crawlers, collectively known as remote inspection technologies (RITS).

The use of RITs can reduce risk for Surveyors and inspectors by lessening the need to access potentially hazardous locations at height, or other hazardous...
