Against the odds: Bolloré Logistics – what happens to the rump after MSC takes its African bite

Those familiar with Bolloré affairs would understand that the way the French group has so far played the possible sale of its African logistics business, aka ‘BAL‘, has been flawless.
“Bolloré Group doesn’t comment on rumours in the press regarding its transportation and logistics [T&L] activities,” it said on 15 October when the first domestic reports and speculation emerged.
Without clearly identifying which T&L activities, in fact, may be the subject of …

Against the odds: Risky business

As we commence the new year, the stark realisation is that supply chain professionals are going to have to become very creative to meet their budget targets.
While hedging a raft of risks.
(Recent) history repeating
I genuinely hope that all you dear readers have had some respite during the holiday season.
As we return to work, we are faced with depressingly familiar headlines such as China’s Ningbo province implementing Covid restrictions, which is …

M&A radar: The DSV value chase – between a rock and DB Schenker

Top brass at DSV hasn’t wasted any time this year making absolutely clear, via the local press, that the Danish forwarder is open to deal-making once again. The sooner the better once the latest prey, Agility GIL, is fully integrated as early as H1 22.
That came just about a couple of weeks after compatriot AP Møller-Mærsk (APMM), smoothly yet publicly – while promoting its latest meaningful contract logistics deal – …

On the wires: Your move, Cosco & ONE, as 2021’s capacity battle ends

Yesterday, the inevitable happened – MSC overtook Maersk to become the world’s largest shipping line, as measured by teu slot capacity.
It’s on all the news headlines – yesterday, Alphaliner’s Top 100 registered MSC’s fleet capacity at 4,284,728 teu, compared with Maersk’s 4,282,840 teu, the difference equivalent to a 1,888 teu mid-sized feeder ship.
[Editor’s note – the table above was published on 5 January, the day before MSC overtook Maersk]

Against the odds: MSC’s Bolloré bid is complex – may leave CMA CGM exposed

MSC’s bid to purchase Bolloré’s African port business may transpire to be one of the largest single M&A moves in the transport and logistics sector – but it could also turn out to be hideously complex.
As DVZ’s editor-in-chief Sebastian Reimann noted in his commentary on the deal: “The many [African] acquisitions make it clear, however, that it is hardly possible to develop this promising, but also highly complex, market organically. …

Supply chain radar: 2022 – the year of direct government intervention

Goodbye 2021, we’re done. But watch out, here comes 2022!
How lucky
I recently argued that we are in a supply chain stalemate, as ports around the world remain congested due to excessive numbers of out-of-position empty containers not being loaded for repatriation by the world’s shipping lines, among other factors.
But how can this be addressed?
Before mowing on, a cocky round of self-applause as shipping trouble was my last column of 2020, …

M&A radar: Mærsk spree… LF Logistics $3.6bn buy – ‘boisterous insanity’?

On Monday, quickly sifting through the 99,999-plus-unread-emails in my inbox (screen grab below) I thought: the M&A binge outside logistics looks so good and widespread, anyway, that something must be fundamentally broken but we’ll soon have our ‘glory days’ in supply chain.

Ohhh, if grandma was still around.
Then
Tuesday came with the MSC/BAL asset-based €5.7bn announcement and today we were incredibly pleased to find out, given the M&A news flow, that …

Hustle and bustle.
Welcome to the Forward Logistics Matrix age, the most exciting era in the most exciting sector – made up of several very complex subsets – in the world, where the next move in the M&A domino game will be totally detached from the mainstream/trade headlines.
