Yilport eyes revival of port of Taranto and ‘new phase of takeover opportunities’

Last year, Yilport signed a 49-year operating lease with Taranto port authority to operate its container terminal, which has been idle since Hutchison and Taiwanese shipping line Evergreen left in 2015 after failing to secure carrier customers.

Iceland set to join SECA regions, adding to pressure on carriers burning LSFO

IMO member states, legislating for the 0.5% sulphur cap within their territorial waters from 1 January, could go a step further and lower the maximum sulphur content in marine fuel to 0.1%.
This is potentially bad news for carriers opting for a strategy of burning maximum 0.5% LSFO (low-sulphur fuel oil) in all but the current SECAs (sulphur emission control areas) in compliance with IMO 2020.
But it’s good news for carriers …

Brexit uncertainty causes ripples at DFDS as first-half profits decline

Brexit uncertainty is making itself felt at DFDS, with the carrier revising its earnings forecast downwards after a six-month performance that led to declining profits.
First-half revenues climbed 9.9% to Dkr8.1bn ($1.2bn), driven mainly by its expansion in the Mediterranean, but a reversal of UK stockpiling in anticipation of Brexit hit profits.
Chief executive Torben Carlsen said: “Brexit is an exceptional situation, currently lowering volumes in our ferry and logistics network.
“In spite …

Asia-Mediterranean a container tradelane ‘on the mend’, says Drewry

Often overshadowed by the larger Asia-North Europe route, the Asia-Mediterranean tradelane has so far this year proved to be slightly more robust.
According to Container Trade Statistics (CTS), westbound liftings from Asia to the west Mediterranean (including North Africa) grew 5.9% year on year to the end of May.
Moreover, Drewry said, the “laggard” Asia to east Mediterranean trade was finally showing “positive intent, following a prolonged period of contraction”, as the region bounced back...
