Electric trucks find a sweet spot with inbound logistics

Using electric trucks for short, repeatable trips to assembly plants is expanding as more OEMs require suppliers to shush the noise and eliminate the diesel exhaust that accompany delivering incoming parts and components.

How did inbound logistics become a thing in an industry where change most often meets resistance? For their own reasons, stakeholders from sustainability-conscious shippers to regulators and OEMs like inbound logistics as a use case for electric trucks.

Mack Trucks settles with UAW on longer agreement

Mack Trucks and the United Auto Workers tentatively agreed to a new five-year labor agreement. It is a year longer than the previous pact.

The longer agreement follows a six-year agreement between sibling Volvo Trucks North America (VTNA) and the UAW. A five-week strike preceded that deal in 2021.

Mack is part of the Greensboro, North Carolina-based Volvo Group North America, which includes VTNA.

Most workers assemble Class 8 trucks at Mack’s Lower Macungie Township. The company’s Lehigh Valley...

Volvo Group names new president of Mack Trucks

Martin Weissburg is retiring as president of Mack Trucks. He will be succeeded June 1 by Stephen Roy at the Volvo Group manufacturing subsidiary.

Weissburg held three senior leadership positions in his Volvo career. In a 2020 FreightWaves interview, he called running Mack, an iconic brand dating to 1900, his favorite. He arrived in June 2018 in time for the launch of the brand’s flagship over-the-road Mack Anthem. A year later, he navigated a crippling labor strike . In 2020, Weissburg led...

Cushier rides becoming standard fare in work trucks

Freightliner medium-duty truck interior

Want to recruit and retain truck drivers? Give them a comfy ride that reminds them of what they drive in their off-hours.

Daimler Truck North America is the latest to apply this thinking with the new Freightliner medium-duty M2 106 Plus, M2 112 Plus, 108SD Plus and 114SD Plus debuting in the third quarter of 2023.

They are not all-new vehicles but refinements are substantial. The segment-leading M2’s new grill and air intake give it a family resemblance to the market-leading Class 8 Freightliner...

Revamped Freightliner medium-duty trucks adopt Cascadia resemblance

The revamped Freightliner Plus medium-duty truck lineup coming in 2023 borrows a few styling cues from its full-size Cascadia brother. But the biggest changes are on the inside.

An all-new electrical architecture makes it easier for upfitters to wire connections to bodies and vocational equipment. The routing changes also allowed radio speakers to move from the dash to the doors — like passenger vehicles — for better sound quality.

The M2 106 and 112 Plus and the 108SD Plus and 114SD Plus from...

Mack finds new customers and old with return of medium-duty truck

INDIANAPOLIS — Mack Trucks took a 20-year vacation from medium-duty trucks. In its first year back, about four in 10 customers were already buying heavy-duty trucks with the bulldog hood ornament. That meant 60% of buyers were new to the brand.

In its first month of sales in January 2021, Mack sold 50 of its Class 6 and Class 7 MD Series. In December, Mack had 9% share of the medium-duty market. For the full year, the brand finished at 3.7%. Penetration targets were tossed aside by COVID and...

Playing nice: PACCAR siblings take turns in product spotlight

The Peterbilt and Kenworth divisions of PACCAR Inc. (NASDAQ: PCAR) share many of the same underlying products. But they practice great courtesy in steering clear of each other when it is time to talk about them.

Kenworth revealed the first full makeover of its Class 5-8 work truck in three decades on Monday. The brand invited media to Phoenix a few days earlier for a preview and short drives. Kenworth closed off part of Third Street downtown to film Monday afternoon’s virtual dealer reveal.

Kenworth overhauls medium-duty truck lineup for first time in 30 years

PHOENIX — Kenworth Truck Co. revealed its first all-new medium-duty trucks in 30 years on Monday, featuring taller and wider cabs adapted from their Class 8 siblings.

The PACCAR Inc. (NASDAQ: PCAR) brand captured 11.7% of the medium-duty market in 2020. That was a record despite an aging lineup.

Now, with fresh products coming in the third quarter from Class 5 to a small Class 8, Kenworth is targeting leasing and sales to individuals at the lower end of the range. It emphasis has been Class 7...
