Clean Arctic Alliance calls for reducing shipping black carbon impacts on Arctic

The Clean Arctic Alliance urged the IMO Member States to reduce the impact of black carbon emissions from international shipping on the Arctic environment, as the UN body gathers in London for a meeting of its MEPC74. Green House Gases Emissions Resolution To Be Submitted at MEPC 74

According to an article published in Safety4Sea, the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH), along with several IMO member states and NGOs, are expected to submit a draft resolution to the MEPC 74 next week.

The report further highlights how the draft will encourage voluntary cooperation between ports and shipping companies in order to reduce vessel GHG emissions.

ESPO supportive of EU proposal for harmonized approach on scrubbers

ESPO announced that it supports the European plea for immediate and harmonized action on the basis of scientific evidence available with regard to the impact of liquid discharges from scrubbers on water quality. For this reason, it backs the EU proposal to bring the issue to the IMO.

IMO Policy Change Documents To Be Made Public Prior MEPC 74

According to a Ship Insight article, MEPC 74  is meeting in a few days’ time (13-17 May) and it will be the first Marine Environment Protection Committee meeting for which documents are publically available in advance of the meeting.

MEPC 74 due in May: What is on the agenda

The Marine Environment Protection Committee’s (MEPC), 74th session is scheduled to take place in 13-17 May 2019. The key subjects to be discussed will be adoption of amendments to IMO mandatory instruments, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from ships, implementation of the sulphur 2020 limit, marine plastic litter action plan, ballast water management Convention implementation, approval of guidance and other matters, technical cooperation and capacity building and seminar on ship recycling.
