Supply chain radar: The appeal of Geodis + Bolloré, if CMA CGM is out of the race

Whether a French revolution spurred by domestic deal-making of a certain size is the next chapter in logistics is as yet unknown.
However, speculation is rife about what’s next for Geodis, which only about ten days ago announced it had “brought its 2013–2018 strategic plan to a favourable close”, while other much smaller domestic deals are being worked out.
By the way, its 2023 plan can be found here – there is …

More M&A in forwarding likely, as major players feel the need to ‘keep up’

And so the forwarding consolidation chat continues. On Loadstar Premium today, we reveal speculation that CMA CGM, new proud owner of Ceva, is in talks with the French government over the possible acquisition of Geodis.
Geodis has said publicly it is looking for a slice of M&A action – but that it wanted to expand in Germany, the Netherlands, China and the US.
Currently owned by a French railway, could Geodis switch to being owned by a French shipping line? Is …

Dance with Panalpina ‘whetted our appetite’ for M&A, says Agility chief

Agility is in the market for a good-sized 3PL acquisition – an interest triggered by its ‘dance’ with Panalpina this year.
Essa Al-Saleh, chief executive of Agility’s GIL division, admitted he wasn’t sure whether Agility had been approached by Panalpina simply to force DSV to raise its offer, but revealed that the proposed deal had “whetted the appetite” for M&A.
“There were earnest efforts by stakeholders to pursue the deal,” he told …

Supply chain radar: About DSV Panalpina’s Sfr20m break fee – and a deal that ‘should have never happened’

The outcome of multi-billion dollar deals in the making can often be unpredictable and that’s why the parties must agree in good faith on a slew of legal clauses aimed at protecting both sides from any possible fallout risk.
At current prices, the ~ $4.9bn takeover of Panalpina (PAN) by DSV, which values the target at 62.3x net earnings, IFRS-16 adjusted, which is implied in the table above – makes no …

APL to quit Asia-Europe trade as CMA CGM eyes greater cost-saving

CMA CGM has announced that its Singapore-headquartered subsidiary, APL, will exit the Asia-Europe trades after the summer.
The announcement came as the French carrier reported its first-quarter results this morning, which included $1.7bn in revenue from recently acquired 3PL Ceva Logistics.
However, it was the decision to withdraw APL from a series of trades and instead focus on its transpacific and intra-Asia services that caught the eye, potentially reversing CMA CGM’s long-held …

Market Insight: ‘Extremely positive reaction’ from both sides as DSV and Panalpina execs meet

As rumours abound in the marketplace that Panalpina staff are leaving or set to abandon the DSV Panalpina (PAN) ship – with some DSV insiders whispering that some DSV staff outside Denmark are also gauging their options, while others have left already – senior sources close to the DSV/PAN negotiations enthusiastically talk about the first meetings that took place between key executives of both companies last week.
Crack on

Analysis: with the clock ticking, Agility faces the Bolloré temptation

Agility isn’t rocking as it did, very conveniently, when talk of a Panapina (PAN) tie-up dominated the headlines in the first quarter – that’s the key takeaway from the Q1 conference call that took place last week.
Which makes it an ideal time to boost expectations via creative financial engineering, if it seriously intends to play an active role in freight forwarding (FF)/contract logistics consolidation alongside other action currently taking place in …

Supply chain radar: DHL Global Forwarding has got its house in order – is it now ready to bite?

The first-quarter (Q1) results of DHL Global Forwarding, Freight (DGFF) were simply outstanding. Never, in recent memory, has the air freight market leader by volumes achieved such a solid quarterly performance on so many levels, with record operating income, or ebit, of €100m.
One obvious caveat, however, is that its headline numbers were likely propped up by IFRS-induced accounting changes, while it also got a little bit of help from currencies. …
