Singapore conducts Asia’s first trial of methanol as marine fuel

The Methanol Institute (MI) is backing a project at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) of Singapore which is expected to be the first evaluation of methanol as a marine fuel in Asia. The announcement came only one month after the IMO’s MSC 100 in December marked further steps to the adoption of methanol as an alternative marine fuel.

The project consists of two phases, with the first consisting of desktop and bench-testing the methanol-powered engine employed in the GreenPilot evaluation...

IWAI, Cochin Shipyard partner for waterways to go green

Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) will use methanol as a marine fuel retrofitting its work boats with engines that could run with the green fuel. Cochin Shipyard would retrofit the boats at its facility in Kolkata. The shipyard had recently formed a joint venture with the city-based Hooghly Dock & Port Engineers.

Specifically, methanol reduces emissions of nitrogen oxides ( NOx), Sulphur Oxides (SOx) and particulate matter and is complaint with emission norms for shipping industry...

Methanol as Fuel

Weighing in on Methanol as a Marine Fuel

Greetings from Dubai where I was invited to present at a conference entitled “Methanol as a Marine Fuel” produced by Capt. Saleem Alavi’s Sea Commerce. What a fascinating voyage into the opportunities, and challenges, presented by methanol as a bridge from here into decarbonization.

Much has been said about LNG as a “bridging” fuel, but not much has been said about methanol, which has the capability to move the maritime industry into a world without...
