Major ship losses continued to decline last year, but smaller incidents are on the rise, alongside increased safety risks resulting from the coronavirus pandemic.
Today’s Safety & Shipping Review 2020,  published by insurance provider Allianz, reveals 41 ships of over 100 gross tons were lost in 2019, 20% fewer than in 2018 and 70% fewer than a decade ago.

Maersk sets $500 misdeclaration fee for wrongly-sized out-of-gauge cargo

In a further effort to crack down on misdeclared cargo, Maersk Line will introduce a $500 fee for special and out-of-gauge cargo if the actual dimensions of the cargo differ from booking details.
Maersk has warned shippers that, from 1 July, even if the actual sizes differ from booked dimensions by as little as a few centimetres, the fee will be applied.

Wan Hai joins fellow carriers to threaten heavy fines for misdeclared cargo

Wan Hai has joined the ranks of many of its carrier peers, announcing it will fine shippers that intentionally misdeclare cargo contents.
The Taiwanese carrier told customers that, notwithstanding any consequential liabilities or damages from a cargo misdeclaration, it would fine shippers, and/or notified parties and consignees, $30,000 per container for misdeclared hazardous cargo, and $20,000 per box for non-hazardous contents.

Better education on cargo declarations needed to prevent more containership fires

After the first boxship fire of the year was deemed to have been caused by misdeclared lithium batteries, forwarders have warned that shippers need to be better educated about cargo declarations, or face increased regulation.
According to Chinese shipping line Cosco, the fire onboard its 10,000 teu Cosco Pacific this month was caused by lithium batteries falsely declared as spare parts.

Still no news for cargo owners on retrieval of Yantian Express containers

Shippers with cargo stranded on the fire-stricken Yantian Express are still in the dark on when or where they might be likely to receive their goods.
