The U.S. Coast Guard will launch a new merchant mariner credential (MMC) on March 1, 2024. The agency is replacing the MMC passport-style booklet (“Red Book”) with a new, certificate size, one page credential. The new credential will be issued to all mariners after the implementation date.

The Coast Guard announced last week that Merchant Mariner Credentials (MMC) that expire between March 1 and Sept. 30 are now extended until March 31, 2021. Coast Guard Covid-19 update: MMC, medical, course approval extensions

The Coast Guard released a Marine Safety Information Bulletin (MSIB) last week that updates guidance concerning mariner credentials, medical certificates and course approvals. The MSIB also updates the actions being taken by the Coast Guard due to the novel coronavirus and the disease it causes (Covid-19).
