10 Safe Practices To Avoid Accident During Mooring Operation

Mooring operation is one of the important tasks that seafarers have to perform on the ship’s deck. Ships enter and leave ports regularly. Tying up a ship when alongside a berth or another vessel is potentially a very hazardous operation unless simple and effective safety procedures are followed.

10 points to remember

Mentioned below are ten points that must be considered while handing mooring operation on ships:

[Answer] What’s the Safest Way of Mooring Ships?

Faulty mooring often causes mishaps and accidents, and hence mooring is a critical aspect of safety in the shipping industry. Keeping this in mind, Prosertek has highlighted in detail the best standard mooring procedures and we are covering that in today’s challenge corner.

Mooring is a procedure to anchor the ship to a fixed or floating element and keep it connected during loading or unloading operations. Safe mooring must withstand several forces, such as wind, the current, the tide and waves.

Maersk employs new rope design to make mooring safer

When a mooring rope holding a docked vessel snaps, the rope can whip across the dock and ship at almost 500 mph — more than twice the speed of a race car.

Mooring is one of the most dangerous pieces of port and vessel operations. In one case, a 602-foot bulk carrier fully loaded with petroleum coke ran aground in California after breaking free from its moorings.

To help hold vessels in place, Maersk has begun installing Snap Back Arrestor (SBA) ropes on the mooring lines.

Maersk chose Norwegian...

First line ashore most possible to snap during mooring, Gard alerts

Mooring operations are challenging and sometimes lead to fatal accidents onboard; Therefore, Gard alerts that the first line ashore has the highest potential to snap given the level of load it can experience to steady a moving vessel.

Specifically, Gard highlights that the first lines during mooring operations have to get and hold the vessel in position until the remaining mooring lines are sent ashore and vessel is safely moored.

Do’s and don’ts when dragging anchor

A dragging anchor is one of the many unwelcome incidents a ship may encounter during its operational life at sea. Sometimes the anchor may drag, something that may not be in control of the crew. So, what rests for the crew to do is to recognize the signs of a dragging anchor: Early identification is the key to avoid accident-related to the dragging anchor situations.

The most frequent anchor-related incidents occur when the anchor drags and the vessel drifts without holding power, which could...
