Running on empty? Hino recalls trucks for inaccurate fuel readings

The U.S. arm of Japan’s Hino Motors Ltd. is recalling 8,025 trucks because a deformed fuel sender float connecting rod sends false readings about how much fuel is in the tank.

Hino reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that 100% of 11 models — 2020-2024 Hino NE7A, NE7B, NE8A, NH9A, NJ7A, NJ7B, NJ8A, NJ8J, NV7A, NV7B and NV8A — manufactured between March 10, 2020, and July 28, 2023, are potentially affected.

Inaccurate fuel indication may lead to an engine stall due to...

Safety officials on automatic emergency braking mandate: Not so fast

WASHINGTON — State law enforcement officials and brake manufacturers want more interaction between the trucking industry and federal regulators before the government considers public comments on a rule to mandate automatic emergency braking (AEB) on heavy trucks.

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), whose members include state police and highway patrols, and the Commercial Vehicle Brake Manufacturers Council (CVBMC), a group under CVSA that represents OEMs, contend that the...

NHTSA pressured to overhaul rulemaking on side underride guards

WASHINGTON — A proposed regulation requiring that new truck trailers come equipped with side guards to prevent deadly crashes is taking more heat from safety groups and the trucking industry for using flawed analysis and being too costly to implement.

Initial sentiment on the issue from the National Transportation Safety Board and insurance groups argued that the Biden administration is severely underestimating the benefits and overestimating the costs of such a mandate, as estimated by the...

Electric truck recalls begin to mount — albeit in small numbers

The number of affected vehicles is barely noticeable — until you count the number of recall campaigns. Electric trucks are having early life quality problems.

The latest of 10 electric truck recalls in the past three months was reported on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website Monday. It involves the loss of power to 82 Freightliner eCascadia Class 8 trucks. The electronic axles may have insufficiently welded planetary gear sets.

E-axles and planetary gear sets are components...

Daimler Truck recalls 54,375 trucks for possible windshield wiper defect

A year ago, Daimler Truck North America (DTNA) recalled 689 Western Star trucks for faulty windshield wipers. That issue now has swelled to a recall of 54,375 units affecting six products covering two and three model years depending on the product.

Unlike the first recall, where 100% of the units were projected to have the problem, just 1% of 54,375 trucks in the new recall are projected to experience the defect.

The windshield wiper linkages may break, causing the windshield wipers to fail. On...

NHTSA truck brake rule under review at OMB

WASHINGTON — The White House is reviewing a proposed rule to establish a safety standard to require and/or standardize the performance of automatic emergency braking systems (AEB) on heavy trucks.

According to a “statement of need” received by the Office of Management and Budget on Tuesday, the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration believes there is potential for AEB “to improve safety by reducing the likelihood of rear-end crashes involving heavy vehicles and the severity of crashes,”...
