Daimler Truck recalling 64,064 units for possible steering loss

Daimler Truck North America is recalling 19 truck models over three production years for a condition that could lead to the complete loss of steering control and an increased crash risk.

The issue — a loose drag link taper joint — led to the recall of 123,481 vehicles in the U.S. and Canada in September 2021. The issue has not surfaced in the current recall population. But Daimler agreed to the recall “out of an abundance of caution” because of an “unartfully worded” service bulletin.

Feds close probe into TuSimple autonomous truck crash

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has closed its investigation into a heavily publicized crash of a TuSimple autonomous truck.

TuSimple said it responded to several FMCSA requests following the April 6 non-injury incident on Interstate 10 in Arizona. The probe closed with no penalties. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration declined to open a separate probe, the company said.

Brake module corrosion continues to vex Daimler Truck

Daimler Truck North America is conducting a third safety recall – about 77,000 vehicles across seven model years in the U.S. and Canada – for brake module corrosion that could cause pulling to one side of the road, which could raise the possibility of a crash.

None of the three recalls involving more than 475,000 units has a crash associated. A miniscule number of vehicles have exhibited the condition among the number built between June 2016 and March 2022

NHTSA fines Volvo Group $130M for slow reporting of recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has fined Volvo Group North America up to $130 million in civil penalties for slow reporting of safety recalls, sloppy record keeping and insufficient employee training in handling product defects.

The penalty is among the largest levied under the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966. NHTSA fined Daimler Truck North America $30 million for similar offenses in December 2020.

Paccar recalls 16,033 Peterbilt refuse trucks following rollover crashes

Paccar Inc. is recalling 16,033 Peterbilt refuse trucks built over the last eight years following three rollover accidents traced to insufficient axle bracket support.

Peterbilt investigated engineering and manufacturing of weld processes at plants after a July 2021 report of a rollover crash in Houston. A second rollover was reported in Detroit a month later and a third was in Denver in March 2022.

Paccar’s filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration did not specify any...

Paccar Inc. is recalling 75,492 late-model Peterbilt and Kenworth trucks because the digital dash can freeze, preventing the system from updating and increasing the chance of a crash.

About 1% of recalled trucks probably have the issue, Paccar told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Affected 2022 and 2023 models include the Kenworth T680, T880 and W990 and the Peterbilt 365, 367, 389, 567 and 579.

NHTSA doesn’t see cybersecurity as barrier to 3rd-party repairs

Federal regulators have attempted to address the need to protect cars and trucks against cybersecurity threats while ensuring that their owners are able to access less costly third-party repairs and maintenance.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration acknowledges that challenge in a “pre-final” version of its “Cybersecurity Best Practices for the Safety of Modern Vehicles,” released Wednesday. The new guidelines update a 2016 version, after soliciting comments on a draft version...

Western Star trucks recalled 2nd time for falling hood trim pieces

Western Star hood logo

Daimler Truck North America is recalling about 4,000 Western Star trucks because shiny parts keep detaching and falling off the hood. The resulting roadway debris could cause a crash.

The latest recall resembles one in April that inadvertently revealed the 57X on-highway truck months before the official debut in August. DTNA reported no crashes or injuries from either recall.

The recall results from an abundance of caution, DTNA said. About 1% of the 4,006 recalled trucks in the United States are...

Safety groups urge NHTSA to reconsider underride guard rule

Back of truck on highway.

A coalition of safety groups want federal regulators to postpone a recent rule on truck-trailer performance standards until the new regulation can be significantly improved.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration regulation, scheduled to go into effect on Jan. 11, 2023, is “fatally flawed,” the safety groups assert, because it failed to consider crucial data on crashes in which passenger cars slide under the rear end of tractor-trailers due to insufficient protection on the back of...
