COLUMN | The need to keep on learning and improving [Tug Times]

A friend recently told me we must do more to protect non-binary people at sea. I nodded wisely, then rushed to the nearest computer to find out what he meant by ‘non-binary people’. I confess I had never heard this particular description (of which more below), but the point is I looked it up and […]

L-ion battery explosion in hand-held radio causes $3 million tanker fire

L-ion battery explosion sequence

The thermal runaway of a cell within a handheld radio’s lithium-ion battery led to a fire on the 106,000 dwt Liberian-flagged oil tanker S-Trust last year resulted in $3 million in damage to the vessel, the National Transportation Safety Board says.

The S-Trust was docked at the Genesis Port Allen Terminal in Baton Rouge, La., on Nov. 13, 2022, when a fire started on the bridge. The fire was caused by one of the cells in a lithium-ion battery for an ultra-high-frequency handheld radio exploding....

Trucks and teen motorists a dangerous mix, NTSB panelists say

Rising costs related to inexperienced drivers and distracted driving are behind a new effort to educate the public — particularly teen drivers — about sharing the road with truckers.

“Car drivers — light vehicles — cause about 75% of the crashes between themselves and large vehicles,” said National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) board member Bruce Landsberg, speaking Wednesday on an NTSB-sponsored webinar, Sharing the Roads with Commercial Vehicles.

The costs of these crashes to crash-victim...

NTSB: Time for action on passenger boat fire detection and extinguishing systems

The National Transportation Safety Board has now released its report on the engine room fire that broke out on the passenger vessel Spirit of Norfolk on June 7, 2022. It is again recommending that engine-room fire detection and fixed fire extinguishing systems be installed in small passenger vessels currently grandfathered out under USCG Subchapter K regulations.

The 1992-built Spirit of Norfolk had 108 people on board when the fire broke out. The fire was too large for the crew to fight, and...
