Natural gas inventories exceed 5-year average after two years

According to EIA’s Weekly Natural Gas Storage report the working natural gas inventories in the Lower 48 states reached 3,519 billion cubic feet (Bcf) for the week ending October 11, 2019, exceeding the previous five-year average since September 22, 2017.

Specifically, the weekly injections in three out of the four weeks surpassed 100 Bcf, or about 27% more than typical injections for that time of year. The inventories on the five regions are based on varying commercial, risk management, and...

Natural gas flaring increases by 11%, new data reveals

The value of natural gas flared by 80 different nations around the world has increased by 11% to hit a global peak this year of $16.4 billion, according to new data analysed by data intelligence firm Brainnwave. This is attributed to the dual effects of the rising price of natural gas and the increased volume of gas flared.

The volume of natural gas lost to flaring has increased by 3.2%, from 140.5 billion cubic metres in 2017 to 145 billion cubic metres in 2018.

Brainnwave pinpointed gas flaring...

A look back at WorkBoat for September 1959

• Lake Erie is expected to get heavy interest from oil and gas producers during the next 12 months, according to reports from Canada. Crown lands under Lake Erie have been leased by a number of large petroleum companies, though interest is apparently in natural gas instead of oil.

• American Commercial Barge Line Co., Jeffersonville, Ind., became the first barge line to apply and be accepted for listing on the New York Stock Exchange last month when 1.53 million shares of its common stock were...

How to keep emissions gap well below 2°C

energy transition outlook
In light of DNV GL’s Energy Transition Outlook 2019 launch, this infographic describes 10 measures that aim to help close the emissions gap to well below 2°C. However, DNV GL added that policies must also be developed in order to mitigate at least three fronts at the same time: higher energy efficiency, more renewables, and industrial-scale CCS.

According to the report, technologies have the ability to deliver the COP 21 1.5°C target. Nevertheless, it mentions that this will not be able with the...

The road to 2050 energy transition

2050 timeline energy
In the most recent Energy Transition Outlook, DNV GL presents its timeline of the next 30 years of the energy transition, which shows many astonishing milestones. Namely, the one of the key takeaways of the timeline is the peak of energy supply and demand, but there are other significant milestones as well.

According to the timeline oil will peak at 2022, while 4 years later transport energy demand will peak. Four years after, in 2030, the world will see another significant peak, with nuclear...

DNV GL Energy Transition Outlook: Stronger policies needed to meet climate goals

DNV GL issued its Energy Transition Outlook for 2019 examining the energy future through to 2050. The forecast says the technology available is able to deliver the Paris Agreement climate goals, but only with strongly enforced policies aimed to enhance Nationally Determined Contributions.

Our work…gives us the confidence to say that technology can deliver the future that we desire – including meeting the 1.5°C warming limit established by the IPCC. The critical questions are how and when that...

Department of Energy Authorizes LNG Exports from a New Project

  • The U.S. DOE approves a new project in Mississippi for the exports of liquefied natural gas.
  • Gulf LNG Liquefaction Company would have authority to export up to 1.53 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas.
  • DOE has approved 34.52 billion cubic feet of exports in the form of LNG and compressed natural gas to non-free trade agreement countries.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy Wednesday issued an order to approve exports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from a new...

Summer natural gas prices to be the lowest in last 20 years

In its July 2019 Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO), the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) expects Henry Hub natural gas spot prices for June, July, and August this year to average $2.37 per million British thermal units (MMBtu). If this happens, this price would be the lowest summer average Henry Hub natural gas price since 1998.

Namely, EIA expects Henry Hub natural gas prices to be 55 cents/MMBtu, about 19% less than last summer’s average.

In the July STEO, EIA changed its forecast for...

Vaca Muerta gas production rise results to Argentinian LNG exports

According to EIA, Argentina’s domestic natural gas production has been steadily increasing in the past three years, due to the increased production coming from the Neuquén Basin’s Vaca Muerta shale and tight gas play. Its production surpassed the 1 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) in December 2018.

Specifically, the growth in production sparked a restart of natural gas exporting via pipeline to Chile and Brazil as well as the start of LNG exports. The first Argentinian LNG export cargo took...

Fight brews over potential natural gas port on Delaware River

The former DuPont Repauno Works site on the Delaware River could be redeveloped as a deepwater port capable of exporting natural gas liquids. Delaware River Partners rendering

A $450 million plan to redevelop a former explosives manufacturing site in New Jersey into a major natural gas liquids export terminal has Delaware River environmental groups marshaling forces to block the project.

Delaware River Partners LLC, a subsidiary of New York City-based Fortress Investment Group, is seeking permits from the Delaware River Basin Commission and other regulators to create the deepwater port at the former DuPont Repauno Works site near Gibbstown in Greenwich Township, N.J.
