Diesel distancing propels alternative fuel options

Renewable natural gas, battery-electric and hydrogen-powered trucks all target fleets switching from diesel ahead of coming regulations requiring costly additional emissions after-treatment. Which alternative will win? Possibly all of them.

Vouchers make first Nikola fuel cell trucks ‘cheaper than a diesel’

Back in 2018, Anheuser-Busch placed an initial order for up to 800 Nikola fuel cell trucks. Ever so slowly, that is becoming a reality.

After numerous missteps and setbacks, Nikola produced 42...

New Class 8 truck deliveries fall for 4 consecutive months

The strength in new Class 8 orders belies a four-month slide in deliveries while used truck prices continue to fall, albeit more slowly as 2023 comes to a close.

Through the first 11 months of the year, the industry has delivered 242,881 new Class 8 trucks, 7.8% more than the same period in 2022, according to Ward’s Intelligence. But the year-over-year lead has shrunk each month since February when sales were 35% ahead compared with 2022.

This contrasts with ACT Research, which reported net...

Fuel cell-powered mining trucks next up for GM Hydrotec

An array of fuel cell power cubes from General Motors will power Komatsu’s massive off-roading mining trucks by mid-decade — each operating with more than 2 megawatts of hydrogen power.

The use of multiple fuel cells to provide power to the massive off-highway Komatsu’s 930E electric drive mining truck is an ideal use case for fuel cells, whose only emission is water vapor. The Komatsu model is the world’s bestselling ultra-class haul truck.

GM and Komatsu will jointly design and validate the...

TuSimple lays off 150 more employees as it winds down US operations

TuSimple Holdings, once a leader in U.S. autonomous trucking development, is winding down its operations after a five-month review apparently found no takers for its business that was the first to conduct a driverless pilot two years ago.

TuSimple went through a brutal internal leadership struggle in late 2022 that was at least partly responsible for chasing away Navistar International, its development partner on a purpose-built autonomous truck. The two sides broke up a year ago this week after...

Traton raises 2023 earnings target after solid Q3

Traton Group, the parent of Navistar International, raised its full-year earnings guidance Wednesday after reporting solid deliveries for the third quarter.

Munich-based Traton reported 15% higher sales in the first nine months at 249,500 vehicles compared to 217,000 in the first nine months of 2022. Improving supply chains helped increase production. Volvo Group and Paccar Inc. both reported solid Q3 results earlier. They are cautioning of a slowdown next year, especially in over-the-road...

Outrider hiring globally for launch of autonomous distribution yards

Outrider Inc. founder and CEO Andrew Smith is the very definition of deliberate. Each robotic advance his company has made to a dangerous or dirty job in a distribution yard builds on another. Since raising $73 million in a Series C round in January, he’s been growing his team.

“While a lot of folks were pulling back on developing their teams, we’ve continued to build out Outrider’s leadership position in both safety technology and deep learning, or AI, for industrial systems,” Smith told me...

Dana drive shaft recall nicks Daimler Truck and Navistar products

Daimler Truck North America and Navistar are recalling 2,247 trucks and buses with driveshafts that could separate because a Dana Inc. supplier used non-conforming material in manufacturing.

Dana filed the recall July 10, naming Daimler Truck and Navistar as customers reporting that reported one drive shaft separation each. No other customers were named.

A broken driveshaft can separate and cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dana said certain driveshafts in two production...

Would Navistar be a good autonomous partner for Kodiak Robotics?

“All of the ladies attending the ball are requested to gaze in the faces found on the dance cards. Please then remember and don’t get too close to one special one. He will take your defenses and run.” — Song by David Crosby, Graham Nash and Stephen Stills

Navistar has remained quiet about its plans for autonomous trucking since breaking off a two-and-a-half-year partnership with TuSimple in December.

Privately held Kodiak Robotics is emerging as a leader in the shrinking field of autonomous...
