Hapag-Lloyd announces the following update on Tropical Cyclone 2 (Barry) currently affecting the New Orleans area:

Terminal Operations:
Container Terminal Operations (New Orleans Terminal and Ports America) closed at noon on Thursday, July 11, 2019.
As of now, the Container Terminals will be closed this Friday due to floodgate closures, subject to change based on conditions as they develop. The Container Terminals are not accepting any live reefer/hazardous cargo at this time.

Based on changes to the current and forecasted conditions the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began opening the Bonnet Carré Spillway Friday due to high water in the Mississippi River that threatens New Orleans and the surrounding region. High water is also a danger to marine traffic in the river.

Miss. River levels falling at New Orleans, spillway closing

The Corps of Engineers is expected to close all bays (gates) of the Bonnet Carré Spillway within the next seven to 10 days.

On Feb. 27, the Corps decided to open the Bonnet Carré Spillway to ensure safe passage of the Mississippi through the greater New Orleans area. Operation of the structure, located about 33 river miles above New Orleans, is relieving pressure on main line levees, maintaining river stages, and regulating the flow downriver from the spillway.

Captain missing after Louisiana towboat capsizes

The captain of a towboat was missing after his vessel capsized on the Lower Mississippi River Monday night, Coast Guard officials said.

Two crewmembers escaped when the 54’x22’, 1,200-hp Seattle Slew was reported capsized at 8:12 p.m. near the Myrtle Grove Fleet, north of Point A La Hache, La., according to a statement from the Coast Guard 8th District.
