New York City officials went to court this week to stop an electronic billboard boat from cruising past the city’s parks and affluent residential neighborhoods.

Ballyhoo Media’s 79’x23’aluminum catamaran carries a 64’x20’ LED billboard similar to those adorning Times Square, and the boat has drawn complaints from New Yorkers who already have consumer advertising thrust in their faces all over the city.

The Miami-based startup has developed a lucrative, high-profile operation off south Florida...

The NYC Ferry public system will expand to all five New York City boroughs in 2020, including a new cross-harbor route from Staten Island, service to Coney Island and additional stops on existing routes.

The Staten Island route will be a 35-minute run from St. George on the island’s northeast to Manhattan’s Battery Park City/Vesey Street landing, and then ending at the Midtown 39th Street landing. Despite the city’s iconic Staten Island Ferry, the distant borough has few public transit options.

NY Waterway has obtained a Corps of Engineers permit to operate a repair and maintenance facility at the Union Dry Dock site, but city officials in Hoboken, N.J. are continuing to resist the plan.

“Union Dry Dock has operated continuously for more than 100 years as a marine repair and maintenance facility.  We will continue that great tradition, using this site to keep our ferries in top condition, operating safely, cleanly and comfortably,” said Arthur E. Commuters fell back on the ferries when an early onslaught of snow and ice locked out commuter bus service from New York City Nov. 15.

Forecasters had warned the region could receive 4” of snow from the storm, but colder than expected temperatures also brought more sleet and freezing rain. That brought on severe road conditions that gridlocked much of the highway network around the city.

Conditions became so serious that buses could not reach the midtown Manhattan Port Authority Bus Terminal,...
