Check Call: ‘How to Win Friends and Influence People’ – 89 years later

April’s book review is a little late but it’s for a classic. We went to what could be considered the original management and leadership book, Dale Carnegie’s “How to Win Friends and Influence People.” In the spirit of full disclosure, it is the version published in 2022, which is “updated for the next generation of leaders.” This version is edited and compiled by Carnegie’s daughter to remove references to people or places that readers would not recognize or are out of touch with...

Ocean carriers blank sailings as bookings drop

Ocean rejection rates spike as bookings fall

(Chart: SONAR Container Atlas)

Much of the focus the past several days has been on the drop in ocean bookings from China to the U.S., and with good reason. The SONAR Ocean Booking Volume Index from China to the U.S. is now down about 50% year over year, roughly in line with the reported average from ocean carriers and other data sources. A FreightWaves article published last week goes into detail.

Check Call: Using bonded warehouses to help shippers

(GIF: GIPHY)

Tariffs for most of the world are still on pause for the next 72 days. April 10, President Donald Trump announced a 90-day pause on tariffs on every country except China. Container ship volume coming from China is dwindling to almost nothing as the 145% tariffs stay in place.

An alternative for shippers with a little flexibility is a bonded warehouse. Bonded warehouses essentially are warehouses where imported goods can be stored without immediately paying duties or tariffs. This...

Freight industry braces for drop in demand

Tender volume takes a dive

Tender volume, a measure of how often shippers request carriers to move loads, has trended down in recent days. (Chart: SONAR)

Up until the past few days, for all the turmoil in trade policy and the financial markets, SONAR had not been showing much change in freight demand, as measured in tender volume. That changed the past few days as the volume of tenders, or electronic requests made by shippers to move loads, declined significantly to no longer track levels of two...
