Check Call: LTL stocks brace for tariff impact

(GIF: GIPHY)

The first quarter of 2025 ended March 31. Now come the first earning reports of the new year as well as guidance for the remainder of the year. The first quarter didn’t see a lot of action with tariffs. There was a brief 48 hours during which the 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico were in effect, but most everything was pushed off to the last week of March or the beginning of April.

Now that tariffs are in place on imports from every country in the world, it stands to be one of the...

Nationwide truckload carrier C.R. England recently announced it has chosen safety and telematics provider Lytx to equip its 3,500-truck fleet with driver-facing cameras. The cameras are part of a larger suite called Lytx Drive Cam Event Recorders, which use AI and computer vision to “identify driving risks, including distracted driving, handheld cell phone use, lack of seat belt use, following too closely, and...

Running on Ice: Pharmaceutical supply chain sidesteps tariffs, for now

All thawed out
(Photo: Matveev Aleksandr/Shutterstock)

In a deviation from the traditional format of the newsletter this week, we’re taking a bigger look at the possible impacts and disruptions to the pharmaceutical and health care industry as a result of “Liberation Day” when the president announced what reciprocal tariffs were slated for various counties and trading blocs.

Countries that weren’t included on the list were awarded an across-the-board 10% tariff on anything imported to the U.S....

Check Call: Tariff watch Round 3, the big one

(GIF: GIPHY)

Another month has passed, which means it’s tariff watch again. The forever will-they won’t-they has returned. Basically everything from the March tariffs that lasted two days will still be in play. The roundup of March tariffs was 25% on Canada and Mexico, 20% on goods from China, and 10% on Canadian energy. The tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico were paused for a month as leaders negotiated a solution.

During the pause, some tariffs were introduced that would go into effect...

Running on Ice: Mr. Cold Chain goes to Washington

All thawed out
(Photo: Jim Allen/FreightWaves)

The cold chain is headed to Washington, not quite in the same manner as Mr. Smith, but in the form of bipartisan legislation. The Fortifying Refrigeration Infrastructure and Developing Global Exports (Fridge) Act was introduced in the House of Representatives and the Senate. This act would add authority to the Trade Title of the Farm Bill to focus on strengthening the global food supply chain for frozen and refrigerated products. The act would add...

Bad vibes in the market for new Class 8 rigs

Bad vibes in the market for new Class 8 rigs

For fleets looking to purchase new equipment, concern over tariffs and an ongoing lack of extra cash continue to complicate their plans. Recent data from ACT Research’s March For-Hire Trucking Index showed fleet purchasing intentions at 35% compared to a historical average of 56% for February.

The report notes: “Tariff uncertainty, which has thrown a wrench into business planning, is likely one factor dampening future equipment purchases, but three...

Flatbed market anything but flat

Tariffs spike flatbed tender rejections

Flatbed tender rejection rates spiked just before North American tariffs took effect in early March, and they spiked again in recent days. (Chart: SONAR)

“What’s happening with flatbed rejection rates?” is the question of the hour from SONAR users. It’s easy to see why – rates shot up to the mid-30s in early March, ahead of North American tariffs (which were delayed for imports that adhered to the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement). Flated rejection...

Check Call: ‘Sell With a Story’ review and LTL spinoffs

(GIF: GIPHY)

This month, I’m reviewing “Sell With a Story” by Paul Smith. At its core, it’s a book about crafting stories and using previous experience to show prospective customers how you can help them in ways that align with what they’re asking.

The first step of the storytelling process is to actually listen to what the prospect needs and wants. This exercise provides a salesperson guidance on which type of story to use to help move the prospect along in the sales process.

Most of sales is...
