Nikola stats show H2-powered trucking is for real

Nikola has delivered 75 hydrogen-powered fuel cell trucks to customers. It has an order bank that should begin to produce meaningful revenue. Now it is producing statistical evidence that hydrogen-powered trucking is not just for show.

At two industry conferences this week and in data shared first with Truck Tech, Nikola revealed it has:

  • Completed 1,666 hydrogen fill-ups at three mobile refuelers in Coolidge, Arizona, as well as Ontario and Long Beach, California.
  • Dispensed 60.54 tons of...

Toyota will use fuel cell ‘emissions’ to supply a car wash

Emissions from a FuelCell Energy plant will help supply water for a car wash for incoming Toyota Motor Corp. vehicles at the Port of Long Beach, California.

It is one of three renewable energy uses at Toyota’s port vehicle processing center. The company claims it is the first to use 100% renewable electricity generated on site.

Toyota and FuelCell Energy Inc. claim the plant models how stationary fuel cell technology can reduce emissions from commercial operations.

Senate Republicans aim to abolish Biden’s trucking emissions rule

WASHINGTON — Senate Republicans introduced a joint resolution on Thursday to overturn the Biden administration’s recent emissions reduction rule for trucks that the lawmakers warn is too costly for truckers and consumers.

The rule, finalized by the Environmental Protection Agency in December and set to go into effect March 27, sets stringent new standards for nitrous oxide and other pollutants for heavy-duty trucks beginning no later than model year 2027.

Trucking industry worried after EPA issues final rule on NOx emissions

The Environmental Protection Agency made good on its promise to issue a final rule on heavy-duty truck tailpipe emissions by the end of the year, but the first take on the rule from engine manufacturers and trucking organizations is that compliance will be difficult.

The agency earlier this year proposed two options for drastically reducing nitrous oxide (NOx) emissions: a two-step process with standards getting progressively tighter in model years (MY) 2027 and 2031, or a one-step standard in...

Trucking braces for new heavy-duty engine emission standards

The Biden administration will soon issue new tailpipe emissions standards for trucks that most truckers — from single owner-operators to owners of large fleets — warn could place heavy cost burdens onto the U.S. economy as a recession already looms.

As proposed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in March, the new nitrous oxide (NOx) emissions standards for heavy-duty truck engines will be either a two- or one-step process.

The two-step process, Option 1, would set a stringency increase...

Report: Diesel truck emissions in NYC affect people of color more

A recent report found that people of color are exposed 17% more particulate matter emissions in New York City.

People of color are being disproportionately impacted by emissions from diesel trucks in New York City, according to a report released by The Real Urban Emissions (TRUE) Initiative.

Diesel trucks are a major source of particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), air pollutants that adversely affect human health. PM2.5 is responsible for 85,000 to 200,000 deaths in the U.S. annually, a 2021 study funded by the Environmental Protection Agency said.

The TRUE Initiative, made up of the FIA...

EPA proposes stricter zero-emission standards for trucks

New federal air pollution standards for heavy-duty trucks beginning with the 2027 model year are forecast to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 90% by 2031 compared with today’s standards, according to a Biden administration proposal.

The proposed stricter standards, which the Environmental Protection Agency confirmed in February were forthcoming and formally announced on Monday by Vice President Kamala Harris, would be the first time truck emission requirements were updated in 20 years.
