Leaking lube oil causes engine room fire on towing vessel

The NTSB issued an investigation report on the engine room fire and explosion onboard the towing vessel ‘J.W. Herron’ on Big Bayou Canot near Mobile, Alabama in December 2017. Water coming over the bow and downflooding through open, unsecured hatches likely caused the Dec. 8, 2017 sinking of a towboat near Memphis, Tenn., that killed the captain and deckhand, the National Transportation Safety Board reported.

NTSB resumes normal operations

The National Transportation Safety Board employees returned to work on Monday. The NTSB staff resumed normal operations and began developing plans to address the work that could not be accomplished during the partial government shutdown.
