Oil and potential contaminants removed from “ghost ship”

Cork County Council completed the removal of oil and other contaminants from the MV Alta ‘ghost ship’, which was washed ashore in the middle of February in Ballycotton, Co. Cork, Ireland.

The Council reported that 62 full barrels and 33 empty barrels were airlifted by helicopter from the area of the wrecked vessel to a prepared drop-off area where they were subsequently transferred onto a vehicle and removed by an environmental agent.

Study reveals Deepwater Horizon oil spill larger than previously thought

A new study led by scientists at the University of Miami, which was published at Science Advances, revealed that the oil spread from the famous Deepwater Horizon oil spill was expanded in many more areas than what was shown in satellite data.

Shipping company fined $1,750,000 for false report on oil record book

A vessel operating company has been fined by the US Department of Justice to pay the amount of $1,750,000 and serve a 4-year term of probation for maintaining false and incomplete records relating to the discharge of bilge waste from the tank vessel Topaz Express, a felony violation of the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships.

Environmental protection barrier to be deployed for Golden Ray

The Unified Command (UC) for the St. Simons Sound Incident Response and assisting organizations are collaborating in finalizing plans for the construction of an environmental protection barrier (EPB) to be built around ‘Golden Ray’.

Fire started on Golden Ray wreck during welding operations

Fire broke out on the wreck of the ro-ro Golden Ray in St. Simons Sound on January 19. When the fire started contractors were contacting welding operations inside the ship.

Luckily, the fire was contained within the hull and was quickly put out by the contractor’s fireboat.

As the vehicle carrier ‘Golden Ray’ capsized in St. Simons Sound, Brunswick, Georgia, on September 8, four of its crewmembers went missing.

USCG responds to oil spill caused by collision in Texas

The US Coast Guard responded to an oil spill near port Arthur, in Texas, caused from a collision between an offshore supply vessel and a tug vessel, near the entrance to Sabine Pass, Texas.

Specifically, the two vessels involved in the collision were the offshore supply vessel Cheramie Botruc 22 and tug vessel Mariya Moran.

The USCG reports that the collision resulted to about 3,000 gallons of diesel fuel spill.
