Tampico, Mexico-headquartered ship manager Gremex Shipping was fined $1.75 million and put on probation Oct. 30 after pleading guilty in federal district court in Pensacola, Fla., to a felony violation of the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships (APPS)

Specifically, Gremex was charged with creating and providing false records to the U.S. Coast Guard to conceal the illegal discharge of oily bilge waste into the ocean by its managed vessel, the M/V Suhar.

Two whistleblower crewmembers could be awarded up to $500,000, if a plea deal filed in New Orleans federal court yesterday is approved by the court. Two related companies that operated the motor tanker PS Dream – Prive Overseas Marine LLC and Prive Shipping Denizcilik Ticaret – pleaded guilty to conspiracy, knowingly violating the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships (APPS) and obstruction of justice related to the falsification of the tanker’s Oil Record Book, which is a required log.

Two tanker engineers plead guilty to pollution charges

The chief engineer and second engineer of the 47,999 dwt, Greek-flagged oil tanker M/T Kriti Ruby, which is operated by Avin International, pleaded guilty May 7 to charges related to the concealment of pollution by falsifying records. The chief engineer also pleading guilty to charges related to the discharge of oily waste into the sea from a commercial vessel near a petroleum terminal in Sewaren, N.J..

Chief engineer gets prison term for oil record book, conspiracy and obstruction offenses

In a case that tells on all too familiar tale of oily bilge dumping, oil record book falsification, and a failed attempted at cover up, Denys Korotkiy, chief engineer of the vessel Donald was sentenced on Sept. 15 to serve twelve months and a day in prison for conspiracy to obstruct justice, obstruction of justice and failure to maintain an accurate oil record book.

Korotkiy was convicted on those charges June 9, following a five-day jury trial.
