With a new name, Chinook Oldendorff starts sailing with rotor sails

Oldendorff Carriers reports that it has now completed the successful installation and operational deployment of Norsepower rotor sails on the post-Panamax bulk carrier Chinook Oldendorff.

Through a joint agreement first announced in December 2023, when it was named Dietrich Oldendorff, the 2020-built vessel transports Elk Valley Resources (EVR) steelmaking coal from the Port of Vancouver to customers across the Pacific Ocean.

NTSB releases report on $5M bulker Sirocco breakaway

The National Transportation Safety Board hashas issued its report on the March 27, 2023, incident in which the 751-foot long bulk carrier Sirocco broke free from its moorings at the Convent Marine Terminal dock in Convent, La., while loading a cargo of coal.

The Sirocco, operated by V.Ships Asia Group Pte Ltd, and under charter to Oldendorff Carriers GmbH, drifted a half mile down the Mississippi River and collided with a barge moored at the Mosaic Uncle Sam dock.

Teck and Oldendorff to fit bulker with rotor sails

In another example of how charterers are helping push forward the move to greener shipping, Canadian mining giant Teck Resources is making a joint investment with Oldendorff Carriers that will see Norsepower rotor sails retrofitted to the vessel Dietrich Oldendorff.

The ship, which carries shipments of Teck steelmaking coal from the Port of Vancouver, will be outfitted with the rotor sail system by mid-2024.
