OneRail founder talks potential of vehicle sharing

Row of vans sitting in a parking lot

Bill Catania has an up-close view of the current last-mile delivery space. The OneRail founder and CEO lives in the last mile. It’s just what he does.

And what he also sees is a growing need to democratize the final mile, which remains very fractured even as it evolves to meet the demands of brands to get items to consumers ever faster. There is a saying that more can be learned from failure than success. But in the world of last-mile delivery, failure can often be a final outcome.

According to a Descartes survey released earlier this year, 75% of consumers had experienced delivery problems in the previous three months and 23% said they would not order from the retailer again as a result. Another 21% said they had lost trust in the retailer and 16% reported they had told friends and family to avoid the retailer.

White delivery van on highway

The challenges of the past few years have strained last-mile delivery networks. And just as they have started maturing with new entrants and efficiencies unlocked, e-commerce started slowing from its pandemic roll. Where exactly it stops, no one is quite sure, but last-mile providers don’t have time to wait. They must service the now and build for the future.

“Last-mile capacity still feels tight,” Jay Sackos, vice president of business development for Dolly, told Modern Shipper. Dolly...
