Soaring fuel prices leave owner-operators with tough choices

Avery Vise, vice president, trucking for transport consultancy FTR, has some advice for owner-operators struggling with a massive spike in diesel fuel prices and plunging spot market rates: “There are good reasons to sell your truck and become a company driver,” Vise said.

Under the circumstances, it wouldn’t be surprising if some of the 350,000 registered owner-operator drivers seek the protection of company driving, or lease their independent services to a fleet, something that 44% of driver...

CEO: Vaccine mandate for cross-border truckers ‘not an issue at all’ for TFI

The COVID-19 vaccine mandate for truckers crossing the U.S.-Canada border hasn’t been a problem for Canada’s largest trucking company, TFI International, CEO Alain Bédard told financial analysts on Tuesday.

“Vaccination at TFI is not an issue at all,” Bédard said while discussing the company’s fourth-quarter financial results. “On the Canadian side, most of our drivers are vaccinated.”

Bédard made the comments less than a month after the Canadian and U.S. governments implemented mandates, on...

Trade group: Exempt cross-border truckers from vaccine mandate

A trucking trade group is urging U.S. President Joe Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to exempt cross-border truckers from COVID-19 vaccine rules implemented in mid-January.

The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association sent letters to Biden and Trudeau  on Monday.

The move comes after the Freedom Convoy entered its second week in Canada’s capital, Ottawa, to protest the country’s rule that took effect on Jan. 15, requiring U.S. truckers entering Canada to be vaccinated. The...

Can I use the bathroom? The answer for truckers is often ‘No’

Commercial truck drivers have endured many indignities over the decades. But none may be as debasing as being denied access to restrooms at locations where drivers pick up or drop off their loads.

It is a common problem, according to drivers and driver advocates. The issue predates the COVID-19 pandemic by many years, though health and safety precautions along with liability issues are believed to have made shippers and receivers clamp down even harder the past two years. While pandemic-related...
