New propeller concept to reduce underwater noise

Kongsberg Maritime has successfully adapted a propeller concept used in naval applications, aiming to provide operational and environmental benefits to commercial shipping customers. By deploying such a technology can significantly reduce cavitation-induced noise and erosion risk.

Kongsberg Blade Air Emission technology is now being applied to commercial ship propellers to limit the effect of underwater radiated noise on marine life. The Blade Air Emission concept applies the results of research...

Using Nanotechnology to Dramatically Improve Safety & Efficiency

With the shipping industry experiencing more and more developments, Russel Chew, Executive Chairman, NanoVapor, gives his opinion on nanotechnology. Mr. Chew highlights that this technology can offer safer and faster solutions that were not thought possible with conventional methods.

For as long as oil and petrochemicals have been in use by transportation, safely managing their highly flammable, toxic, and environmentally damaging vapors has been an ever-present challenge. Even with increasing...

Methods for improving operational efficiency

During the 2019 SAFETY4SEA London Forum, Dr. Teemu Manderbacka, Senior R&D Engineer, NAPA, talked about the various methods for improving operational efficiency.

One way to improve energy efficiency is to optimize, to better plan operations, and – in a cost-efficient way – to reduce GHG emissions, lowering operational costs and possibly even improving revenue and thus the overall global competitive edge. However, for planning and optimizing operations, we would need to have current, up-to-date...

Wartsila successfully trials world’s first ‘targetless’ DP laser sensor

The technology group Wärtsilä successfully completed sea trials of its SceneScan system, the world’s first ‘targetless’ dynamic positioning (DP) laser sensor. This  technology requires no reflector target to be deployed, increasing both safety and operational uptime.

Specifically, the technology has been developed by Guidance Marine, a Wärtsilä company.

The sea trials were conducted onboard the Topaz Citadel, a vessel owned by Topaz Energy and Marine, a leading international offshore support...

ESL’s new bulkers experience technical problems

Serious technical problems with cranes slowed down the deployment of ESL Shipping’s new LNG-fueled bulk carriers, the Finland-based shipping company, part of the ASPO Group, stated. The problems in the conventional mechanics of high-power cranes, which are subject to warranty, have significantly interfered with the efficient operations of both vessels.

The two handy size dry bulk cargo vessels Haaga and Viikki, are the first of their kind to be LNG-ran and were delivered to the company in 2018.

Th...
