Class 8 orders hit 14-month high in November

Class 8 truck orders continued to outpace the sluggish freight market with November orders surpassing 40,000 . It was the best month since September 2022 on a seasonally adjusted basis.

November preliminary North American Class 8 net orders were 41,700 units, rising by 9,000 units from both October and year-ago November, ACT Research reported.

Even accounting for seasonal adjustment, orders surpassed 40,000 for the first time in more than a year.

Class 8 catch-up largely over as replacement iron drives orders

Pent-up demand for new Class 8 trucks in a slowing freight market has rebalanced equipment orders to replacement purchases.

This is not an altogether bad thing as manufacturers look to a slower quarter with more holidays.

“The Class 8 backlog should rise by around 3,400 units when full October data are released in mid-November,” Kenny Vieth, ACT Research president and senior analyst, said. “If those numbers hold, Class 8 backlogs will have ended October at around 165,000 units.”

That’s a healthy...

March Class 8 truck orders reset to normalized demand

The ups and downs of Class 8 truck orders appear to be returning to a normalized pattern with manufacturers sitting on a healthy backlog of trucks to build.

Nearly all build slots are filled for 2023. That prompted slower order activity of 19,000 units in March, FTR Transportation Intelligence reported Tuesday.

Reduced order levels will continue through the summer, historically a weaker period for bookings. That normalcy was upended during the pandemic. Lower year-over-year orders in five of the...

Semiconductor fears chill Class 8 orders in April

Row of blue Peterbilt Class 8 trucks at dealership

Class 8 truck orders fell to their lowest level in seven months in April. Manufacturers, wary about ongoing supply chain disruptions, held off accepting bookings as they fret over how many trucks they can deliver in 2023.

On a preliminary basis, truck makers accepted 15,400 to 15,800 new orders. That’s according to industry data trackers to ACT Research and FTR Transportation Intelligence. The monthly average had been about 21,300 over the past seven months. On a rolling 12-month basis, Class 8...

February Class 8 truck orders: ‘You can’t always get what you want’

The story of Class 8 truck orders in February can be summed up in the classic Rolling Stones’ lyric: “You can’t always get what you want. But if you try sometime, you’ll find you get what you need” in the exorbitantly priced used market.

Manufacturers kept the lid on how many orders they would accept in February because they don’t know when the supply chain gridlock will ease enough to ensure a steady flow of parts.

And the Russian invasion of Ukraine may worsen the availability of...
