Postal Service bumps up EV mix in delivery fleet order

The U.S. Postal Service said Wednesday it will order 25,000 electric vehicles as part of its initial 50,000-unit purchase of new delivery trucks, a move that more than doubles the number of EVs it had planned to order.

The Postal Service also said that it will supplement the 50,000-unit order by acquiring 34,000 commercial off-the-shelf vehicles. The Postal Service did not specify in its announcement the suppliers of the vehicles being purchased off-the-shelf. About 40% of the combined 84,000...

“We are pleased to be moving forward with this much needed investment in our fleet,” Postmaster General and CEO Louis DeJoy said in a statement. “Since I came on board a year and a half ago, we have continuously evaluated...

Modern Shipper Top 10: Last-mile delivery

Modern Shipper launched in February with a mission of highlighting the ever-growing last mile of the supply chain. Throughout the year, we learned a lot, and our readers helped inform us of plenty more.

Looking back on the year that was, there were plenty of stories that resonated with our readers — from drones to automation, from gig workers to last-mile delivery providers. Of course, we can’t forget e-commerce, which is rapidly changing the supply chain and everything and everybody that...

Workhorse halts electric van deliveries, says NHTSA filings unreliable

Rick Dauch isn’t fooling around.

The new CEO at Workhorse Group is halting sales of the company’s long-delayed and production-challenged electric delivery vans because customers want more cargo capacity and a better design.

And Workhorse (NASDAQ: WKHS) is recalling 41 vans already in customer possession because it cannot vouch for their safety. The company said it has not received any customer complaints about safety but it is alerting the Securities and Exchange Commission about the issue.

“The...

Workhorse withdraws next-gen mail truck bid protest

Workhorse Group is withdrawing its protest of a multibillion dollar delivery truck contract that the U.S. Postal Service had awarded to Oshkosh Corp. after reconsidering the background of the bid as well as other business opportunities.

“Since I joined the company six weeks ago, we have been conducting a deep and intensive overview of all aspects of our business, including an examination of the history of our USPS bid and subsequent protest filing,” said Workhorse CEO Rick Dauch in a statement...

Failure to launch: Workhorse Group ousts CEO as production delays escalate

Quarter after quarter of missed production targets finally caught up with Workhorse Group CEO Duane Hughes, ousted Thursday at the electric delivery van maker and replaced by auto industry veteran Rick Dauch.

Workhorse (NASDAQ: WKHS) has produced very few composite body electric vans in each of the past few quarters. Supply chain disruptions are the latest setback following a decision to change battery suppliers and a COVID outbreak that affected 36% of the workforce.

The company failed to meet...

Workhorse cries foul in screed against Postal Service award to Oshkosh

Workhorse Group claims the U.S. Postal Service treated it shabbily and never intended to consider its bid for new mail trucks while allowing Oshkosh Truck Corp. to switch its proposed vehicle and lobby to win the multibillion-dollar contract despite a nondisclosure agreement.

Those are among the highlights of a 58-page partially redacted filing Workhorse made public Tuesday in its attempt to overturn the contract that the Postal Service awarded in February to Oshkosh (NYSE: OSK).

The surprising...

Truck Talk: Trash talking edition

This week, we’re talking trash. Not what’s in it, but what moves it. The frequent stop-and-go operation of garbage trucks make them ideal for electrification. So why aren’t they being adopted more quickly?

Waste not

Is there a better vehicle candidate for electrification than the unlovable garbage truck?

They start and stop for a living. Regenerative braking captures energy to put it back into the battery. Garbage is still going to be smelly. But take away the diesel fumes spewing from the...

Short squeeze? Workhorse Group stock again a retail trader plaything

Until a reversal on Friday, the share price of Workhorse Group (NASDAQ: WKHS) had been skyrocketing, adding 59% to its value in the past two months.

Nothing is happening in the business to drive such appreciation. If anything, the clock is ticking before competitors in the electric delivery van space catch and overtake Workhorse, which struggles with myriad production issues.

As a meme stock like retailer GameStop Corp. (NYSE: GME) and more recently AMC Entertainment Holdings (NYSE: AMC),...

The Daily Dash: Oshkosh, Workhorse tangle anew over Postal Service contract

The Daily Dash is a quick look at what’s happening in the freight ecosystem. In today’s edition, we highlight the Oshkosh-Workhorse squabble over a Postal Service contract, as well as hopes for federal funding for truck charging stations and more.

The High Five

1. Oshkosh Truck Corp. can make 100% battery-electric delivery trucks for the U.S. Postal Service, undercutting an assertion by Workhorse Group that Workhorse’s being passed over for the contract dooms the mail service to remaining a...
