Mexico regains status as No. 1 US trade partner

Mexico is again the top trading partner of the United States, with two-way trade totaling $48.47 billion in February, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

China had been the top U.S. trade partner for 10 consecutive months beginning last May.

In February, the nation’s top trade partners were:

Otay Mesa border crossing gets $65M from California

California officials recently approved $65.2 million for projects aimed at speeding up commercial border traffic between San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico, as well as modernizing facilities at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry (POE). 

The projects include creating a state-of-the-art border crossing three miles east of the original Otay Mesa POE. The new crossing will be called Otay Mesa East or Otay Mesa II. Once it’s completed, it will be the third border crossing in Otay Mesa.

$8M worth of narcotics intercepted in shipments from Mexico

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers recently seized cocaine, fentanyl, heroin and methamphetamine worth more than $8.4 million in separate incidents in Texas and California, authorities said.

The first case occurred Oct. 9 at the World Trade Bridge in Laredo, Texas, where officers found 30 packages containing 74 pounds of alleged cocaine hidden in a tractor-trailer from Mexico. The cocaine had an estimated street value of $786,450.

International ports along the United States-Mexico border continued to post double-digit declines in trade as the global economy struggled to recover from the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

US-Mexico border infrastructure upgrades on the way

Improving border infrastructure, upgrading highways and modernizing ports are part of the $14 billion infrastructure package recently announced by Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Cargo trucks waiting up to 8 hours at California border crossing

Mexican freight transporters are facing wait times of up to eight hours near the U.S.-Mexico border in Southern California.
